I know tons of people who watch the "match" I'm in England, a game is Poker, this is a match to me. When I say I know tons of people who watch the match, this includes Americans, and they tell me it's mainly for the food and drink. It's just a party to most. I agree it is more than just a football game and Nash Out is correct (but I'll never tell him lol) - it is now marketed to a non-football audience.

I don't agree that the game is 'dumbed down' I believe the complete opposite is true.

From the advent of American football (circa 1880) football grew as a reflection of American culture.

We became in the 20th Century a nation led (for better or worst) by experts and specialists.

American Football is the most complicated game in existence - even the least demanding (cognitively limited) positions such as linemen have a playbook and blocking assignments that are more complicated than any other position in sport except maybe a baseball catcher.

QBering in the NFL is possibly one of the most dufficult jobs. There are only 32 NFL teams and at anyone time and only half the QBs playing the game are actually any good at the job.

The phyical, cognitive and a list of intangibles such as compartmentization are so demanding that in a population of 330 million plus we are unable to come up with 32 men who can play the poistion with competence.

American Football is in all its aspects, play, marketing, corporate structure the most American sport there is.

Yea and so is the average American in the work place. Lol

But the real brilliance of American football was the replacement of the scrum with the scrimmage.

It is a game made up of 80+ 'get ready, get set, go' - it is a serious of mini dramas that allows for the audience to buy into each event (down) separately. Each with its own situation, action, and climax.

A 30 second rest (for the fan) and then it happens all over agsin. Mini dramas, 'third and four' or major dramas, down by four points and two minutes on the clock. , Drama, drama, drama, with a necessary attention span of only five to eight seconds. Perfect for the average American who wants to talk (have an opinion), drink his beer, take a quick piss and get back in time for the next mini drama.

Back in the 1970s when the NHL finally got its legs under it in America, they said it would replace football as the most popular sport because it was so fast and continuous.

Turned out it is too fast and too continuous for the average American auidence. Now the Stanley Cup is broadcast on ESPN II.

Everything in hockey happens at break neck speed with no chance to build drama. All the great moments are enjoyed after they occur. There is no chance to anticipate them.

The greatest spectator sport ever conceived; I personally don't watch any longer. Find it kind of boring. Imagine what I think of MLB, NHL, NBA!
