  • State of the "I Fought Ali Club" in 2022

remember when I started geekin on Boxing, creating an "I fought Dempsey" research project of still living opponents from Jack Dempsey's record.
Muhammad Ali had 61 fights against 50 opponents.
Each one a legend of sorts for having been in there with "The Greatest", all those years ago. Recent losses of Brian London & Leon Spinks has cut the roster of the "I fought Ali" club to just twelve.
Today, only these 12 few remain:

    Alex Miteff
    George Logan
    George Chuvalo
    Joe Bugner
    Rudi Lubbers
    George Foreman
    Chuck Wepner
    Jean Pierre Coopman
    Richard Dunn
    Alredo Evangelista
    Earnie Shavers
    Larry Holmes

    Thats it folks

    - - That's substantial since nobody, even his critics thought Ali could ever die...

    Ali checked out beautifully

Just a little dash of muss

    And a whole lotta fuss

As The People, they cried, The Greatest has died

    Yet Valhalla awaits him still

Jack Dempsey and Joe Louis are a chompin’

Let’s give him a good ol’ fashion stompin’

Gonna be some all time fights for the ages

To wag them tart tongues of all knowing sages

who always gather ’round for yet another round

    Bottoms Up~~~R.I.P. Ali

There are conflicting reports about the status of Philadelphia slugger Don Warner, AKA Hasan Muhammad, who would be 83, and we have been walking that down.
He was a so-so heavyweight with Big knockout power if he could tag you, who faced Ali in Ali's 12th fight, when Warner was 17-6-2 (16), calling himself the "Knockout Specialist". He had been a one-time (January 1959) Prospect of the Month by Ring Magazine.
Angelo Dundee called him "a tough left hooker from Philadelphia", but he wasn't tough enough for Clay. Though Clay predicted a knockout in the fifth round, his win actually came a round ahead of his prediction. Warner had claimed before their fight that he "had Cassius Clay's number", as he had sparred with him
several times in Miami, and that he "Knew the trick to get to Clay". He'd stated "You can't match his speed, but you can beat him to the punch with a little trick I figured out while sparring with him. I can't say it now,
but after our fight, everyone will be coming to my dressing room to congratulate me". But Warner was bloodied and knocked through the ropes in round four. When asked about his failure to predict the outcome accurately, Clay responded that he had taken one round away from Warner because Warner had refused to shake hands with him at the weigh-in.
Hasan Muhammad afterwards became one of the top ranking "security enforcement" staffers for Elijah Muhammad and the Nation of Islam.
We are researching leads the might lead to information about his death or whereabouts so that we can advise our partners at BoxRec.

I really can't base this on any research or data but sometimes it appears as though former boxers generally reach a pretty nice age before they pass on.

Well, they got a lot of exercise. However, I don't believe head bashing promotes longevity. The big surprise is that ANY boxers live to their 80's and 90's? I knew one who trained with the Gibbons brothers and had about 70 pro fights, not counting the carnival fights. He lived 'til the age of 101.

This is a good project for some ambitious member.

My favorite examples are Jack Dempsey and Max Schmeling who looked like eachother, the former lived to be 87 and the latter 99. Quite lucid and healthy till the very end too.

                  - - Lubber's been homeless with his wife for quite some time. If he passes, could be it won't be in the news.
