I THINK ** . . . West ******ia held the Sullivan-Ryan go in the WV panhandle.

I read once that they set up the pitch just a 100 yards from the Ohio border with everyone planning to race over the border if the police showed up.

That may just be folklore, but great folklore if it is.

    ** Nend to confirm location.

Not a world title fight bud. That was the American and it was in Mississippi

Sully "won" world by drawing Charlie Mitchell in a vacant fight in France. Sul was the US champ, Mitch was the UK champ, they fought to a draw but since Sullivan was already so popular Mitchell was happy to call him world champion and happy to say he drew the world champion. It's a bit like Sayers-Heenan.

Ryan beat Goss for the US title in West ******ia though.

We considered Ryan - Sullivan a world title fight and we identified John L champion after.

Now the Brits can say what they like and you can haul water for them if you like but the Great John L Sullivan won the HW Championship of the World when he stopped Paddy Ryan in nine rounds.

It was in all the magazines, you must if missed it you anti-American revisionist purest, you!

But that was in Mississippi? Oops!

And thanks for the correction- I will remember it was the Ryan-Goss fight next time. Also I had it on the wrong border - the town (Collier, WV) was on the Pennsylvania border not Ohio.

I'm not trying to be a **** here and I get I'm not meant to take this seriously, but who do you mean we?

Wiki has it McCaffrey for some reason. No effin' clue why myself. Mickey was just a decent regional guy....not even a champ of any kind.

              I based it off tradition.

              Moly-Cribb= World
              Sayers-Heenan= World
              Allen-Mace= World
              Coburn-Mace= World
              Sullivan-Mitchell= World

Makes the most sense IMO. When a US champ fights a English champ we call the winner the World champ until Corbett and beyond. Everyone else is just a US or English champion.

I don't think so. Very few shows have been held there in general, but there have been fights.
