Gloved contests and John L. After that the rise of Jack Dempsey
- - March 17, 1897-Fitz vs Corbett in a unification with Thomas Edison Black Mariah Studio providing the first ever full length feature film and blockbuster that turned out to be an International Blockbuster, the first KO.
First phantom punch, KO, and young, flashy unmarked and undefeated loquacious Dandy vs a taciturn, smaller, steady no quit slugger.

- - Actually the fight financials by Edison to make the deal were substantial as was the public response nationally and internationally BlockBuster level that impelled the creation of first ever movie theaters to accommodate the crowds...y'er welcome...

The arena was half empty. Dan Stuart the promoter had an arena built to accomodate 20,000 people, but the crowd was estimated to be between3,and 5 000.All sourced for contemporary news papers and can be found in Pollacks excellent book on Fitz.
Edison had nothing to do with the filming of the figh,he was out bid and so was the other bidder Vitascope, the winning bid for it was $11,000 won by E J Rector and he bought out both Corbett and Fitz's percentages too.
There are a few lines here. For one, Boxing always was reserved for those coming up the economic ladder. No sport captures the pure immanence of literally "fighting" up the ladder. And it has always been satisfying for those to literally punch noses to progress! One can literally see the champions from each group immigrating!
But Marg is the man on this topic! And if you really look into it, like the Greeks in our culture we fight for glory, heroics... So this is a long time thing... It is part of our culture.
Then there is the way to settle conflicts. This is a third strain... Dueling and settling one's honor...

- - Actually Rector was part of the Edison team developing the equipment that allowed the fight to be filmed. Edison financed the failed Fitz/Maher effort by Dan Stuart, the first defense by Maher of his Corbett sanctioned Steve ODonnell title fight won by 1st round KO. Fitz in turn KOed Maher in the first round whose footage has never been revealed or seen if it even exists..
Corbett and Fitz agreed to a $10K guarantee + 15% of the profits in Carson City numbering something in multiple $100Ks when all was said and done, ie several 10s of Ks for them. Rector was in no financial position to buy out Corbett/Fitz %, Edison the financier was if that happened when it became obvious what a BLOCKBUSTER the film became sorta like George Foreman's Grill on steroids.

Y'er welcome!!!
Nope ! Rector won the purse bid against Edison they weren't partners or even collaborators the other bidder was Vitascope. The ring was originally going to be 24 feet ,but was cut down to22 feet to accomodate the camera. The fight was staged at noon to get the best light. Corbett and Fitzsimmons were originally going to receive a percentage of the film rights but Rector purchased them for$13,000 each.
Fitz wore light pea green gloves, dark blue trunks with a belt covered in small American flags.Corbett wore green trunks, with a red white and blue belt with a green buckle, and rosette his gloves were tan coloured.
Sources The New York Journal March 18th 1897.The Reno Evening GazetteMarch18th 1897,San Francisco Chronicle,SanFrancisco Examiner these were all the same day reports. The crowd was between 3000 and 5000 Corbett was the 10/6 favourite. The agreed purse was$15,0000 ,winner take all, each side to post a bond of $2,500.Dan Stuart the promoter posted a$5000 guarantee that he would stage the fight the remaining $10,000 to be posted 30days before the fight.Ticket prices were$5,$10,$20,$40..
The Maher v Fitzsimmons fight was not filmed, the fight only lasted one minute and 25 seconds and because of the brevity of the fight and the poor weather conditions the Kinetoscope camera did not get used. There are dozens of primary sources to this, plenty of them in Pollack's bio of Fitzsimmons which is open on my desk as I type this.

- - Rector acting as an agent for Edison as he also did for the Maher fight. Edison did the distribution of the fight. Maher fight was filmed, but has never been released to the public no matter the weather conditions and doubtless lost by now forever like most of the Corbett fight...duh.
OK, U can cite all the ABCs til' the cows come home.
