  • Nemeses

Some boxers have a nemesis. It may be just a tag, but it is true anyway. Clay's nemesis was Norton, whom he never did beat properly, in my opinion.

Mosley's nemesis was Forrest, and Forrest's nemesis was Mayorga. I believe Winky Wright was another Mosley nemesis.

So far, Canelo's nemesis is GGG, whom he has not properly beaten yet.

Boxing is full of nemeses. Not everybody has one, but many do.

Robinson had arch rivals but apparently no nemesis. Nor do I know of Robinson ever winning a decision that he should not have. Do you? Duran only had arch rivals too. On the other point, maybe he should not have been given the nod against Barkley.

As great a pugilist as Archie Moore had a couple nemeses: Ezzard Charles and Charley Burly, neither of whom he ever beat, properly or otherwise.

    Anyone else?

    Hearns has Barkley to remember.

Take away Hearns' career-end loss to Grant and what is left:

a loss to Leonard, a loss to Hagler, and two to Barkley.

        - - Time fer another denture refit.

Canelo emasculated the Kazakh emasculator to go on an all time history in the making storming of boxing in the here and now. I say that sadly as a former Golovkin fan who has been a ship adrift without an anchor since his Canelo encounter. He made some terrible strategic moves on the advice of his mgr, Tom Loeffler who did a brilliant job until he flubbed it. Loeffler also flubbed Cecelia Braekhus brilliant undefeated career with a cash grab from Hearn instead of allow her to retire in grace as a female role model with more income endorsements in her post career than she made in purses with Hearn.

Such is the greed that sees too many fighters hang on past their best. Insert U dentures way past retirement now.

          - - Just the opposite, but maybe you too young to recall the beginning.

After an officially admitted scoring error cost Manny the first fight, the immediate career purse rematch offer to settle the matter turned down by then BALCOless Juan. He chose to fly to Indonesia for peanuts to be humiliated by Chris John.

          >>>> 3rd Marquez fight that he needed BALCO Meme Heredia vitamins to replace the pissoir spritzers he trained on vs l'l Floydy and still lost. So, 0-2-1, 0 KO going into the 4th fight still hooked up with BALCO, on the verge of being KOed for the umpteenth time by Manny, a Manny southpaw foot fault leaves him open for BALCO Juan Hail Mary.

Again, reverting to the first fight, BALCO Juan offered a career purse vs Manny in a Mexico City Bullring in front of 100K screaming Mexicans all for Manny.

Nyet, the humiliation would be too much for BALCO Juan who impugned his own legacy with his own frightful decsions...you're welcome

Triple G is not Canelo's nemesis.

Nemesis: the inescapable agent of someone's or something's downfall.

He doesn't have to beat GGG, just not be beaten by him. Which he hasn't been; GGG is not a nemesis, only an unanswered challenge.

Barkley was Hearns' nemesis; Norton as Ali's also works, for Norton beat him at a time when we thought only Frazier could, and then Ali won a questionable decision, followed by a very questionable decision.

Re SRR: You could say that SRR was LaMotta's nemesis. And Greb after a while must have felt the same about Tunney.

Nemesis: Anyone who plays Aaron Rodgers in an NFC Championship game. If an event and not a person can be a nemesis then the game itself is Rodgers'. (Can an 'event' be an "agent"?)

A story I read in one of the rags really makes Norton sound as though Ali thought Norton was his nemesis . . .

Ali supposedly called Foreman and tried to talk him out of retirement, purportedly saying to Foreman: "You come back and take care of Norton for me and I'll give you a rematch."

P.S. If there is any truth to what I wrote above it makes one think that Ali believed that 'styles make fights.'

An obvious one was Ali being Foreman’s nemesis.

It sure looks that way but shouldn't there be more than one encounter? Otherwise evey defeat becomes a nemesis.

On the other hand the way Foreman seemed to unravel afterward makes you feel that it is more than just a defeat.
