  • 1934 Jack Dempsey vs Joe Louis

    - -This one of the greatest of the all time real fights that can be had.

Jack 39 yrs old been engaged in coast to coast exhibitions fighting himself into shape, now sparring his new prospect and soon to be heavy champ Max Baer.

Joe 20 years of age been making a storm of the division.

Joe would likely be intimidated by Jack who in turn was near twice as old without having actually engaged in a commish sanctioned fight.

Always favored Jack prime to prime, the true greatest fight, but here I think after the first round ends, Joe figures he can do this.

Oh so close in their moment, but oh so far away near 90 years later. Maybe in Valhalla...

I don't think the fight is close either - If Dempsey mugs him in the first round maybe it's a fight- Louis could be KD - but even the Dempsey of '27 probably couldn't have handled Louis at the close of his first year.

You want a fight it's Dempsey '23 vs. LOUIS '38.

The crowd picture? At first look I assumed was Dempsey-Tunney '26 in Phily because of the crowd size. But the darker looking skinned fighter on the right looks to be Dempsey, thus making the shorter fighter on the left maybe Carpentier.

On the other hand the fighter on the left looks to have Tunney's hair and square block head.

In '26 I believe Dempsey and Tunney are wearing the 'new mandatory' dark red and dark purple trunks which on the B&W photos makes them look like they are both wearing black trunks.

In '27 Tunney was wearing white trucks and Dempsey wearing some sort of dark color but I have never been able to figure what color they were.

This photo has both fighters in white trunks which makes it's Carpentier, I think.

        Which fight is it ?

PS. In George Bellows famous painting of 'Dempsey out of the ring' he has Firpo in purple trunks. I don't think it was artistic licence, Firpo was probably wearing purple.

To me this is the photo that says 'Jack Dempsey' better than any other. Pushed away by referee Barry, Barry was only going to be able to hold back Dempsey's tiger instinct for so long; ready to pounce this photos shows all his fury.

            - -Think Jack could mug him 2-3 rds because his reputation and near 90,000 screaming fans, but he's too old to win.

Photo is the 7 acre Georges purpose built wooden grandstand. Wish I had the contract to demolish it. I'd disassemble to take out to my 50 acre tract in the hill country to create wooden shrine of a mansion worthy of a Dempsey fight.

Well, yeah!!! 23 Jack vs 38 Joe makes folks forget about Jack and Jill, the best ever all time heavy fight.

As to Tunney looks, in your rising Tunney with Jack chomping at the bit, look closely at Tunney...Spock ears explains why he couldn't win. Had a Vulcan blood transfusion!!!

The ears do look funny . . . Wonder if that is camera shadows or swelling from getting his ears clubbed?

P.S. After the cluster fuc in Shelby - the busted town took apart the stadium and built themselves a new train station with the wood. Then the creditors went bankrupt and never paid the builder for time or materials.

I wonder what happened to the stadium at Boyles Thirty Acres? Someone must have taken it down eventually; it was a quickly built wooden arena. They did use it two years later for Wills-Fripo ('24).

Some say the lumber used was too new and full of sap; others say it was treated like the green wood we use today when touching outdoor concret. Either way it sent thousands home with their dress pants stained, and many ladies with their gowns runied.

P.S.S. One more piece is useless info . . . I think this is the last of the straw hat crowds . . . Styles were in flux in the '20s and would see the straw hat go out of style. You can already see fewer straw hats in this pic when compared with Dempsey-Willard two years earlier. (Both fights were in July.)
