Did Roldan have Hagler in trouble before the thumb?

Juan Roldan was a tough exciting fighter to watch. Was Hagler in trouble before the thumb in round three? Argentina seems to come up with some really good fighters. Both fighter didn't really live a long life. Roldan passed away a few months before Hagler.

    - -Scored a flash KD, but I don't ever recall Marv being visually hurt in any fight.

The only time I ever saw Hagler even close to stunned was in the first minute of the Hearns fight. He briefly held onto Tommy after absorbing some of Hearns thunder. When I look at footage of the Roldan KD, if you look closely at Marvins feet, they come out from under him like it's a slip.OK Roldan landed a shot that hit Hagler in the back of the head the same time Marvin was avoiding the punch and his feet slipped. If that's a KD so be it. He never hurt Marvin. Roldan was an awkward and physical SOB until he would run out of gas.

He stopped Hagler in his tracks briefly, if you call that hurt. Then Marv chugged right back to work.

I never said hurt, just in trouble. Not as in close to going down, but just feeling the punches more than a fighter would like to.

Hagler look in a bit of trouble the last minute before the thumb in round three. Hagler was backpedaling and taking more hits than the first two rounds. Although in the second Roldan landed a good uppercut and a body shot that Hagler didn't like. That seemed to be the time that the fight turned momentum for Roldan until the thumb. When Hagler went to the corner at the end of round two his corner knew this was a fight and Hagler shook his head, but when a corner has that look the fighter knows there could be trouble which is another word for worried or distressed. They knew Roldan was no cakewalk or in other words it is not an easy fight.

Yes, I have to agree. That was the only fight where Hagler appeared to be rocky.

I do feel hagler was struggling to get to terms with him and roldan was winning easily before the thumb and I actually felt that thumb was intentional.......hagler seemed to throw that uppercut with the thumb end of the glove pointing up and I have never seen punch land like that before.
Stylistically roldan was giving hagler big problems up to that point

I watched the fight live in 1984 and I recall the same thing. Roldan was moving Hagler back most of the time and landing anywhere. When Hagler went back to his corner after round 2 they told him not to get discouraged.

Hagler retired when he was only 32 which was disappointing. I wanted to see Hagler Duran II, Hagler Roldan II, Hagler Hearns II, and Hagler Leonard II. He must have known it was the right time to leave though. I don't know if he had taken too many punches in his career or he didn't want to face any of these fighters in a rematch.

He finally gotten a taste of the really big money with SRL - I suspect it was the only rematch he wanted. Certainly Hearns would have paid big as well but Tommy was campaigning at SMW and LHW by then (I think) and probably wouldn't have been willing to make 160 agsin. Duran wasn't going to draw big enough, the first fight was a good fight but not exciting. Roldan was for fight fans only, no cross over to the sports fans and PPV money.

Well Hagler did try to get a rematch with Leonard, but to no avail, so Hagler retired after that.
