Can any of youse read Italian?

    I got this book:
The War of the Fists: Popular Culture and Public Violence in Late Renaissance Venice: 9780195084047: Medicine & Health Science Books @ Amazon.com

As the name suggests, it covers pre-English boxing in Venice just before the English bare knuckle sport kicked off.

It's not a bad book but it makes a lot of allusion to its own source material, which is in Italian...unless there's a sub-language/dialect for Venetians. It's a Venetian text from a nameless chronicler I'd very much like to read at least the accounts of the one-on-one boxing matches. What I get in the book is more like an overview. Sometimes it gives names and points out this guy was rather like a champion and this other guy was the rival champion, and they fought, and X won, but that's it. I know there is at least a mythical account of the actual boxing match here and there because in the book it names poems and accounts

I can't read them so it'd be a waste of time for me to gather the material unless someone online cane read Italian and is willing to translate the text for me.

Online translators are weak but if patient you could work your way through them. Or what about contacting Davis office at Ohio State and asking if they know if the sourcrs can be found already translated?

Some are decent, most are pretty bad.

          M:

Look for universities not far from your area. One of them should have a classics department with a department who knows of a renaissance Italian scholar. I am assuming the text is written in renaissance Italian? If it is modern Italian than you can probably put an ad up on craig's list.

A bunch of times! I took my time responding because the book flows nicely but isn't well organized as a research tool. I mean it's hard to look stuff up in the book and the best way to know is to read and remember.

I counted beyond ten mentions, but they're all for very different reasons and very disconnected. I some time, I'll transcribe what I can, what's in english, here. Then after that I'll tackle the Italian translation issue and add what's in Italian.

Seems to be a super important bridge located in the center of venice that held some of the largest pugni and mostre ever, but I am lacking any detailed narrative for the fighters in these battles for the most part. War of Fists is very good for the sport as a whole but as far as details about particular battles it's very sparse.
