Reminds me of those Ringside documentaries ESPN and then later ESPN Classics used to show of boxers. Whenever they'd do a bio of someone pre 1960s, ESPN would often try to include radio broadcasts of fights they'd show to go with the video, which was pretty cool IMO.

Digression: back in the late sixties we use to watch the NFL with the sound off and listen to the local radio call the game. Radio announcers are more exciting and they have to call the action they don't pontificate like TV announcers.

I would do the same for a fight today if such a thing was possible.

The audio broadcasts come from a database of old radio recordings. I doubt they were added by anyone who follows the sport.
If you watch the film, Tunney was watching the official waiting for the right part of his count to rise. He says he could have gotten up earlier if he wanted to. And when he did it was clear he had his legs with him.

Tunney really did a number on a not so old Dempsey. Maybe Dempsey won 2-3 rounds of 20. If the second fight was scheduled for 15 rounds do we get a TKO for Tunney? Tunney gave Dempsey a shot at a third fight. Dempsey who could barley see and needed help to congratulate Dempsey of corse declined. Yeah I think he would have TKO'd him over 15 rounds. 10 was just enough for Dempsey to go the distance.

It was Tunney who declined to petition the Illinois commission to extend the fight to 15 rounds when Dempsey asked -- Dempsey eyes were closing in the first fight not Chicago.

The question isn't whether Tunney could have gotten up but would he have had his legs under him had he had to rise 5 seconds earlier.

He ran for the rest of the 7th he needed those legs.

I want to add you are absolutely correct about Dempsey not wanting a second rematch. At the time he stated (as did Greb) that he couldn't best Tunney. He didn't make excuses or ho and hum about maybe this or maybe that.

Later in life he always said the 'long count' controversy was a blessing in disguise becuse it let him walk away not feeling like a (complete) loser. (My words not his but the sentiment is the same).

I’ve watch the long count hundreds of times over the last 45 plus years. Tunney was looking at the ref counting as of what would have been the count of 8. However he was sitting in an awkward position with his legs tucked under him as he sat against the ropes. I believe there would have been a likelihood that he would have missed getting up in time had the count been a legit 10 count.

Tunney would have had 5 seconds less to recuperate and he would had had to rise off the canvas from an awkward position before the count if ten.

                    - -I'd say such is as irrefutable as is possible given the evidence.

Jack would've retired to continue his lucrative Hollywood career as the forevermore champ free of Wills who was an nonentity by then. Tunney would win the vacant title, possibly against a faded Wills who turned down their eliminator and finish out his career as he did post post Dempsey with subsequent new champs falling in line with what actually occurred...the End...
