  • Great Anticipation and Bust-Out Fights

There have been many fights of the century, with anticipation creating a fervor and intensity that transcends the fight game itself and excites the populace imagination.

These fights come for a variety of reasons, long lay-offs, claimed ducking, social adversity, maybe sometimes just two great fighters, e.g. Johnson-Jeffries; race, Dempsey-Tunney. I; Return of Dempsey, Ali- Frazier I; The Fight.

Most often these greatly anticipated matches involve ATGs and the fight meet expectations.

But once in a while they fall flat on their face.

All this talk about TUE v. Pac has me thinking that Mayweather- Pacquiao fits this category of being a great disappointment.

Another that comes to mind is Leonard - Duran III

Considering the absurdly long build up do you feel Mayweather - Pacquiao failed to measure up?

    Can anyone think of others?

    - -Junior had a chance to take on the greatest P4P fight in the 3rd millennium on the eve of the 113th year anniversary of the greatest untold fight in history, the great, great, great grandpappy of modern boxing and Hollywood, JJCorbett vs Bob Fitzsimmons, the prototype of the undefeated, fleet footed, fast handed, loose lipped dandy vs the stoic, deadly slugger.

He bricked it. 5 years later after being swaddled away from the general population for his safety in The Big House as a women beater, the farce was nothing more than a cash grab at the expense of the general population of boxers who deserve better financial conditions for keeping boxing alive for superfights and busted superfights. The build up classic American marketing puffery was 100x more productive than the farce itself. Since Manny has done his best to keep traditional boxing alive while Junior the new king of the Farce Network.

Roy being touted by Jellyman as the greatest p4p heavywt who would out flash Louis, Dempsey, and Rocky all on the same night was pretty much a busted flush after DKing got his greedy grubbies on him for the Quietman John Ruiz fight. Never seen a fighter tarnish up so rapidly as that. Ray vs Marv an incredibly flat fight with Ray running inbetween popcorn flurries and Marv unable to get untracked until too late. Fury bricking the AJ superfight in Saudi Arabia didn't even have to set foot in the ring to soil that fight. Now fighting Deyonce for more peanuts just pitiable.

I remember when De La Joya vs Trinidad was the biggest fight to be made. Highly anticipated. The two best welter weights in the world at their prime. The fight itself was a flop. A boring chess match that had Oscar out-boxing Felix for the better part of the fight. He then chose to listen to his corner and coast the last several rounds which cost him the fight. One of the most disappointing fights ever, second only to Floyd vs Manny.

Mayweather-Pacquiao, tons of heavyweight fights that included Tyson and Lewis - including against each other.

            That was certainly a letdown.

              - -Pea vsJCChavez a busted flush.

Anyone could see Chavez was beyond his best after DKing got him on the nose candy, and Pea a runner/stinker/clowner wasn't about to fight a great fight. Did a great job of clowning the fight into a draw, a fight he could've established himself with the greats. That's what nose candy did to those two fighters as happened to Macho who never outgrew the habit much to his demise.

Oscar should've finished strong, boxed the same way he did the first 9 rounds and that fight would've been in the bag for him. A close UD at least.
