I'll have to look to confirm, but, this morning I'm pretty sure I read Panama Joe Gans debuted in an 8X8

Zach Clayton was interviewed and was asked about ring size for the Ali Foreman bout. He stated it was the smallest ring he ever refereed a fight. He said it appeared to be a 16 foot ring.

Dempsey-Tunney I was a 16 foot ring (I heard). The next year Tunney got a bigger ring and needed it. Sounds like Foreman was being indulged but more likely the only ring they had.

I know that the 3rd fight between Leonard and Duran was not considered to be much of a fight, but the ring looked pretty big to me. Does anyone know the ring size and glove size for that bout?

I understand that Duran needed money at the time, so Leonard probably could have had anything he wanted in the contract (Big ring, big gloves, 12 rounds, catchweight).

The reason the ropes were loose I’ve read was because the ring size was so small. They did not have ropes designed for that small of a ring.

Maybe . . . it is possible that wsas an Edison ring. His camera had a problem covering the entire ring. In the Corbett-Fitzsimmons go the camera couldn't catch the corners and as Corbett crawls to the ropes (after the famed punch) he crawls out of the frame.

Edison had a rinky-dink ring (the black maria [sp]) which he used to film exhibitions.
