But your point is well taken, so much about him was overstated that it created a revisionist backlash; it became popular to demean his prowess.
DIGRESSION: I'm also a Jack the Ripper geek.
The 1970s was the decade of conspiracy theories and the history of the Ripper murders became plagued by mutiple theories. The 1980s then saw a revisionist backlash seeking to debunk all those theories. Of course they then went too far, claiming all traditionally accepted evidence as bogus. By the time the debunkers got done, one was left wondering if there was ever a city named London [read sarcastic].Last edited by Willie Pep 229; 03-10-2022, 11:47 AM.Comment

True but only because it is over stated. Tyson did have pretty good footwork for a HW. Moved quickly - he didn't cut off the ring in the classic sense but moved forward with a quick relentless assault that he became an irresistible force (circa 1989).

When you get down to it, there's no reason to place his footwork over fighters like Ali, Holmes, or Louis. Quite frankly, Tyson's footwork isn't in their league. It was that constant overrating and abject nuthuggery that created the anti-Tyson backlash in the first place. Which is a shame, since I've always said Tyson was the one fighter who I'd love to crack open a beer and breakdown old fight film with. Tyson's about the only fighter I know of with an appreciation of boxing's history.Comment

Now, for the uninitiated, "Starship Trooper" is a song by the British progressive rock band Yes off their "Yes Album". At the time I came up with the name I was seriously playing the hell out of prog. As for the bltch-boi I just ignored, his profile says it was made in 2011. That makes me think this some regular's alt account that he uses for trolling. I don't waste my time arguing with trolls: I tell them to phuck off and ignore them.Comment

And that was the point. Tyson himself said he patterned his footwork on Jack Dempsey's. That's great, and coupled with his straight ahead speed, was very effective. The problem was when opponents would let him come straight in on them: When forced to continuously turn his footspeed disappeared and his footwork became (no pun intended) pedestrian. Similar to what Dempsey experienced against Gibbons.

His feet were somewhat quick but nothing in comparison to the likes of Ali and certainly not to the ability in positioning to the likes of Louis.Comment
