Cus D'Amato was an old school trainer who made Tyson watch old fight films from the Jim Jacobs & Bill Clayton collection. He has likely seen films that none of us know even existed.
Tyson was a student of the game who had great appreciation for the old timers and drew a lot of his inspiration from them, particularly Jack Dempsey and Joe Louis.
Bernard Hopkins and James Toney, two of the most skilled fighters of this era, both state Jersey Joe Walcott, Archie Moore and Ezzard Charles as their inspirations.
“I developed my style by watching tapes of old fighters. I watched Ezzard Charles and Jersey Joe Walcott constantly. I learned a lot from watching these guys and studying"
-James Toney
"I'm cut from the cloth of the old Jersey Joe Walcott, Ezzard Charles, Henry Armstrong tradition. Those are people I look up to."
-Bernard Hopkins
Willie Joyce was an underrated lightweight/welterweight contender who was coming off wins over the likes of Henry Armstrong, Ike Williams, Chalky Wright and Lew Jenkins. Pep outboxed Joyce to win a shutout 10 round decision in one of the most impressive performances of his career.
Pep fought and beat lightweights his whole career so competing against bigger men wasn't impossible for him. Mayweather's size could be the deciding factor here however although I'm not sure if Floyd would be able to impose his greater size and strength on Pep, it's not exactly his style.

the battle of old vs new is ******, both old timers and new boxers are for the most part, equal. As jab and the great A said, boxing isnt a sport where you can modify things a whole lot, there isnt a lot different besides shorter fights, quicker stoppages and better quality gloves.
However, the really old timers, such as pre 1900 fighters, were really pretty primitive and wouldnt do well today

I think floyd beats pep fairly easily the same reason i think mike tyson would beat joe louis easily, fighters back in the day never seen fighting styles such as mayweathers or tysons.
And it does sound ridiculous saying the game is faster without proof but i still believe it is, I guess just because in every other sport we have seen progression year after year and records constantly being broken. And athletes have much more knowledge now on how to eat and train to make themselves better. It would suprise me if boxing was the only sport that remained constant
