steve collins appreciation thread

the celtic warrior... defeated both eubank & benn... never been KOed and was incessantly avoided by roy jones jr...

along with wayne mccullough, his chin was seemingly made of granite and as a fighter, one of the toughest ever...

Pretty overrated fighter, and the only thing i remember him for was pulling out against Calzaghe, someone who i think he didn't want nothing to do with.

He also use to think a prime Roy Jones was avoiding him, now that makes me laugh. Roy would have destroyed him with one arm tied behind his back!

Collins retired on the advice of his doctors (there were lots of reports of him suffering blackouts and collapsing during training). Nothing to do with not wanting to face Calzaghe.

He was one tough guy though, and pushed Mike McCallum to the wire, although imo he caught Benn at the right time.

As for Roy Jones, well it's another of those "woulda, coulda, shoulda but didn'ts" as far as Jones is concerned. If he could destroy Collins easily then why didn't he? Collins would certainly have made a better fist of it than some of the guys Jones was fighting.

Collins was a tough somewhat limited costumer who didn't have the word quit in his vocabulary. A true blue-collar fighter.

I got to meet Collins around 89' or 90' when he was training with the Petronelli brothers in Brockton. They were looking for sparring so we went up there. When we got there he was in the ring with the South African national amatuer champion and he was unbelievable. My trainer realized I would be in over my head and said no, as I had only been fighting about a year.

That said, he was cool as could be and was more than willing to work with me.

Anybody on these boards who has ever fought before and been in the ring with a good pro will tell you theres a huge difference between a world class fighter and your run of the mill tough guy. I like to think I was pretty tough, but just watching I knew I was out of my league.

Collins may not have been the best, but he was an exceptional world class fighter. Not great, but head and shoulders above the average wanna be.

Been a fan of his since than ans always will be.
