Collins retired on the advice of his doctors (there were lots of reports of him suffering blackouts and collapsing during training). Nothing to do with not wanting to face Calzaghe.

He was one tough guy though, and pushed Mike McCallum to the wire, although imo he caught Benn at the right time.

As for Roy Jones, well it's another of those "woulda, coulda, shoulda but didn'ts" as far as Jones is concerned. If he could destroy Collins easily then why didn't he? Collins would certainly have made a better fist of it than some of the guys Jones was fighting.

Actually Joe Calzaghe said in his book and alot of people inside heard that, he didn't really want to know with Calzaghe, and he made alot of that blackout **** up. Also a few months after calzaghe and now he does charity boxing matches but likes to go full out in them........ hmmm so much for the black outs.

And i've seen the McCallum fight a good few times, and to say he pushed him to the wire is really over the top. as i look at fights like Azumah Nelson/Sanchez, Billy Conn/Joe Louis, Ike Quartey/De La Hoya etc there fights that the loser pushed the winner to the wirer. Not the McCallum fight, were Mike was very confident that he'd won at the end, and pretty comfortable by scores of 111-117,111-117,110-118.

Becuase Collins wanted to fight him in the UK, and also i would of liked to probaly see collins fight roy more than some of the other, but Roy would of been far to fast for him. But Roy fought Toney, and Hopkins who were both better fighters than Collins.

He lives off beating a finished Eubank and Benn, and a couple of defences of a bit of a paper title (WBO), he also isn't a nice man.

So Calzaghe says. Personally, I’ve got no reason to doubt the reports of neurological problems. The tip-off on that was probably when he got dropped by a journeyman in his last fight.

Seriously, the guy took on McCallum, Benn, Eubank, Johnson, Kalambay etc and was more than willing to fight Jones, yet he’s running scared of a relatively green Calzaghe? Doesn’t seem likely.

Benn I agree but Eubank was hardly finished. He was 29 and unbeaten, and still squeezed in a few battles with Calzaghe and Thompson after Collins. I've also seen the McCallum fight a few times, and my impression was that he ran McCallum close. McCallum won, but Collins pushed him hard and came on strong in the second half.

Did Collins specify the Jones fight be in the UK? Considering he fought all over the world and was especially keen to face Jones, it seems strange he would insist on that. As far as I knew he was willing to fight Jones in a phone booth with just a man and his dog watching. Like I said, I think he would have put up a better fight than some of the guys Jones did face, especially at 168.

There's a few women who would probably agree that he's not a very nice man, but then lots of boxers aren't very nice. It doesn't stop them being good boxers though.
