OK. I'll start something and if you and others are interested we could build an interesting resource. It probably won't end any arguments such as "Was Louis better than Ali?" but it would be fun.

When I have the first stage done I'll add to this thread and post a link.

How did you come up with the ratings for each catergory? Did you assign them yourself?

I'd definately be interested in that. I had done a spreadsheet as well with their accomplishments on which is how I compile my list.

I then give them points in each category:-

1>Total years reigned = 5 points for every year
2>Total number of defenses = 5 points for every defense
3>Times champion = 10 points for every time they became champion, +2 points for every year since they won their first title, until winning 2nd title. e.g George Foreman won the title twice giving him 20points, he won his 1st title in 1973 and his 2nd in 1994 a gap of 21 years giving him a further 42 points.
4>Quality of opposition = A=20 points, B=10 points and C=5 points (Of course this is subjective and my opinion)
5>Impact on the sport = A=20 points, B=10 points and C=5 points (Again this is subjective and my own opinion)

I have left room for abilities which I have not yet done but will do shortly

                Here is the spreadsheet:

I think this is a question that needs to be asked to those of you who do rankings. This came about from discussion in the George Foreman : Overrated? thread.

To those that actively pursue creating your own top 10 all-time lists let me pose this scenario to you.

Fighter A - 2 Time Champion : Has won 40 fighters, yet out of those 40 fighters has only faced 7 ranked contenders. Of those 7 contenders he has defeated 2 fighters that could be placed in the catergory of being great. The rest were just good contenders. Defended his title 4 times.

Fighter B - also 2 Champion : Has won 39 fighters. Of these 39 fights has faced and defeated 17 fighters that are ranked, however only one of these fighters could be considered great, the rest just good contenders of the time. Defended his title 8 times.

Granted these are hypothetical, and not meant to emulate any certain fighter, but which fighter would you rate first? The reason I ask this is because certain standards seem to apply to only certain fighters (myself included) and would like to know how everone else feels about this.

Hawkins, I think that scenario would only come into play when ranking fighters that could only be read about. I wouldn't base my conclusions on that scenario alone without viewing the fights. But to answer your question, I would lean toward the fighter that beat fewer top ten fighters but beat two greats. For example take Ali, Foreman, and Frazier. Amongst each other, Ali was the only one out of the three that beat two fighters, Foreman and Frazier had both beat one. But I'm sure good examples could be made for both.

I couldnt just rate them on those facts, i would need to know more about the fighters. Era they fought in, their attributes any other achievements.
