LAS VEGAS – A 20-year-old junior welterweight prospect promoted by Canelo Alvarez nearly knocked off another undefeated fighter on the Alvarez-Gennadiy Golovkin undercard Saturday at T-Mobile Arena.

LAS VEGAS – Gennadiy Golovkin gave an intense Canelo Alvarez a smile as they were separated on stage Friday following their ceremonial weigh-in. Now that they’ve made weight at a jam-packed plaza outside of T-Mobile Arena, these rivals barely have to wait 24 more hours for their third fight. Four years and two days after Alvarez won their 12-round middleweight championship rematch by majority decision, they will return to T-Mobile Arena to compete in another 12-rounder for Alvarez’s IBF, WBA, WBC and WBO super middleweight crowns.

LAS VEGAS – Elnur Abduraimov was entirely too strong for Manuel Correa on the Canelo Alvarez-Dmitry Bivol undercard Saturday at T-Mobile Arena.

LAS VEGAS – Canelo Alvarez came in at almost exactly the same weight Friday as he did for his only other light heavyweight bout. Guadalajara’s Alvarez was officially 174.4 pounds for his 12-round, 175-pound title fight against unbeaten WBA champion Dmitry Bivol on Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena. Bivol, of St. Petersburg, Russia, stepped on the Nevada State Athletic Commission’s scale slightly heavier than Alvarez, at 174.6 pounds, on a makeshift stage outside of T-Mobile Arena.

SAN DIEGO – Julio Cesar Martinez still has a fight but with plenty of work left ahead. The WBC flyweight titlist failed on two official attempts to make the 115-pound contracted limit for his scheduled 12-round junior bantamweight fight with legendary former four-division champion Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez. Martinez weighed 116.4 on his second try, nearly two hours after weighing a beefy 117 pounds during the official commission weigh-in Friday morning.

Erislandy Lara registered one of the quickest knockouts of his career in his most recent bout, though still struggling to resonate with home viewers. The 38-year-old Cuban export flattened overmatched Thomas ‘Cornflake’ LaManna in the 1st round of their Fox-televised bout, which aired live May 1 from Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California. The win for Lara came as part of a three-fight telecast which averaged 636,000 viewers according to Nielsen Media Research. The show peaked at 726,000 viewers, occurring near the end of a televised swing bout featuring 18-year-old Guadalajara-based lightweight Fernando Angel Molina (6-0, 3KOs) in a six-round shutout win over Prisco Marquez (4-3-1, 1KO).

Erislandy Lara never planned to stick around very long at middleweight, nor did he do so in his first true fight at the weight. The former junior middleweight titlist made quick work of Thomas ‘Cornflake’ Lamanna, starching the boxing cult favorite in the opening round of their Fox-televised headliner Saturday evening at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California. A left hand put Lamanna down and out at 1:20 of round one.

Andy Ruiz Jr. provided proof Friday of all the hard work he has put in to prepare for his fight against Chris Arreola. The former heavyweight champion came in at 256 pounds, 27½ pounds less than he weighed the day before his loss to Anthony Joshua in their 12-round rematch 16 months ago in Diriyah, Saudi Arabia. Ruiz weighed 283½ pounds for his rematch with Joshua, 15½ more than Ruiz officially weighed for his historic upset of the previously unbeaten British superstar in June 2019 at Madison Square Garden in New York.
