Eddy Reynoso is open to attracting yet another glamour fighter to his San Diego-based stable.
Canelo Alvarez’s lifelong coach, confidant, and arguably the top trainer in the sport is not shooting down the idea of providing guidance to former two-time heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua.
The British boxer dropped his titles in September via unanimous decision to Oleksandr Usyk.
Although he hasn’t officially split from longtime coach Rob McCracken, Joshua (24-2, 22 KOs) has made the rounds in recent months and received pointers during training sessions from the likes of Floyd Mayweather Jr., Robert Garcia, Ronnie Shields, Virgil Hunter as well as Reynoso, the 2019 trainer of the year.
When Reynoso was asked if he’s open to adding to his already impressive stable – which also includes, Oscar Valdez as well as heavyweights Andy Ruiz Jr. and Frank Sanchez – the Mexican maestro was all for it.
“I’m a boxing trainer and willing to work with anyone. Him also. Whoever, it’s just a thing of when the fights will be happening, and we are ready. Yeah, I spoke to Joshua and [Matchroom Boxing head Eddie] Hearn to see what can be done and we will see what’s next,” Reynoso told Fight Hub TV. “I would love to work with Joshua. Why not? My job is to train fighters, and I will see if I can make it work.”
Reynoso also offered some improvements he’d work on should he and Joshua become a tandem.
“I think work his distance more, better combinations. He has a lot of good traits, a lot of good physical traits, but doesn’t take advantage of them,” said Reynoso.
Joshua and Usyk are slated for a rematch this year, as Joshua looks to regain his WBO, WBA, IBF and IBO heavyweight titles. The only time Joshua has had a rematch in his career was against Ruiz in 2019 when the Brit rebounded from a seventh-round TKO loss to score a unanimous decision six months later.
Reynoso doesn’t foresee any issues with both boxers potentially training under the same roof.
“There’s no conflict there having Joshua there with Andy. They both don’t have fights, so there’s the opportunity to work with both of them. No, there’s no conflict, not at all,” said Reynoso. “Andy has other fights coming and so does Joshua.”
