Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya will be meeting with Top Rank CEO Bob Arum in the next couple of days to hopefully finalize a fight between Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto. They have already started the discussions, which appear to be going well.
De La Hoya says the HBO Pay-Per-View target date is Cinco De Mayo weekend on May 2nd. Cinco De Mayo weekend is the preferred time period for Floyd Mayweather Jr. to return. The WBC/WBA welterweight and junior middleweight champion has already stated that he plans to fight on the very same May date, which De La Hoya says will not be possible.
"The good thing is that we started the talks. I'll be talking to Bob Arum in the next two days, we will sit down and hopefully this fight is done. First we must finalize the details of business of the fight, then grabbed the date of May 2," said De La Hoya to ESPN Deportes. "There is no secret here that Canelo Alvarez wants to fight in May, on May 2. Now if Mayweather wants to fight, it must be April or June perhaps."
