Rising contender David Morell is not getting a big head and is keeping his feet firmly planted to the ground.
Just a few weeks ago he became an interim-WBA 168-pound champion, but he is not confused by the sparkle of his new belt. He is still the same young man who arrived from Cuba full of dreams, without forgetting those who extended a hand to him.
He made history, at the age of 22, by winning a title in just his third fight and he does not intend to stop there. Morrell is already contemplating his return to the ring in November to make his first defense under the Premier Boxing Champions flag, while crossing his fingers and hopes that the public can see him live and direct.
"Very soon I will return to the gym to resume training," said Morell to George Ebro. “I will never forget my first title, but I know that there are other more important and stronger opponents. I am not afraid of challenges and I am looking forward to what may come from this point forward.''
Morell defeated Lennox Allen in Connecticut to become interim king of the World Boxing Association, as well as presenting credentials in front of an unfamiliar audience.
"I am aware that I can improve much more and I will not rest until I achieve the closest thing to perfection," added Morell. “My camp wasn't the best, but that's no excuse. I will continue to work hard to, in due course, become the master of my division.''
Speaking of his division, Morell has closely followed the evolutions around Saúl “Canelo '' Alvarez, who holds the WBA's "regular" title at 168. Callum Smith is the "super" champion of the weight class.
"I'm still not at their level, at the level of a Canelo, I recognize that," Morell explained. “But with time and effort, these differences will narrow. In a couple of years I feel like I'll be at the same sporting level. Today I already feel like I'm the best in the world in my mind, but in real life it will take longer.''
