WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto got what he wanted. The Puerto Rican star wanted to take a break to spend time with his family and wasn't looking to go right back to camp for a September fight. Cotto's team is negotiation a fall showdown with Mexican sensation Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.
With Floyd Mayweather Jr. receiving approval for a September 12th fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, everyone involved with Cotto-Canelo, including HBO, felt it was better to push it back to October or November. ESPN Deportes is reported that November 21 and November 28 are the two current working dates for the fight.
The two locations being discussed are New York and Las Vegas. Cotto turned 35-years-old in October and has a record of 40-4 and 33 knockouts, while Canelo is 25, 10 years less than the four division champion, and has a record of 45-1-1 and 32 knockouts.
One of the obstacles yet to be resolved is Cotto's mandatory defense to Gennady "GGG" Golovkin. A step-aside deal must be reached or Cotto will be unable to defend the belt with Canelo. Cotto has stated in more than one interview that if the WBC presses him on the matter, he will vacate the title and fight Canelo in a non-title affair.
