I agree with ShoulderRoll, though I have no idea how to quote him and give him the credit on this new format. Suarez can get his title shots, and then is in a place to earn more money over the next few fights for it if he wins. Lomachenko is a payday, but it is a "well, he was shot and you beat an unranked, shell of a former good boxer" if he wins, or it is a killer on your ranking and your future pay scale if you lose. Take the title shot, move on from there based on if you win or lose. Bet on yourself, do not cash out.
If nothing else, Zuffa has already made things better. These sanctioning bodies- which have turned into the single biggest reason for fragmentation and division in the sport and I am still generally cheering for one or two to go broke and disappear- now have to actually work together to combat the new structure. I have said this for a while now- give Zuffa a five year time frame to see what they do or do not do as far as actual impact. But if this is any indication, even if they fail they will have far reaching effects on the business of boxing.
You can see this in 2 different sports. The most recent is LIV in golf. Even if it folds next year, the pay structure and how the PGA is talking about reducing the number of tournaments to help ease the stress on their athletes shows the PGA realizes it cannot just rest on the way things are. If you go farther back, take a long look at how the original USFL changed how the NFL did it's business. Free agency, bigger salary caps, and adjusting rules to open up scoring were all directly tied to the NFL losing stars to the USFL, even if that league only lasted a few years. I expect Zuffa to have that kind of ripples in boxing.
So an 0-2 record gets you a ranking? Got it. Please do not confuse this statement with if I feel Verhoeven deserves a rematch or if he should get a nice fight against another top HW off his performance- because he does. But being ranked? No, he does not belong ranked above any other HW that has paid dues for years in the square circle.
