Why is Canelo still a star?

He fights everybody but the guys fans want him to fight. Even more, many fans are annoyed and angry on him because of ducking Benavidez, the guy fans believe he should fight. He doesn`t give the fans fights tehy want, which should be a definition for somebody that should be a star. His style is also not very entertaining. How is he somehow still a star is beyond me. Americans are a special breed of deluded, American boxing fans even more so. Canelo is only a superstar in your collective minds.

This is probably the right answer. If he was for example English or Ukrainian, he would be forgotten already. Apart from Canelo having natural ability, skill, IQ, iron jaw and proving himself in wars with other hall of famers.. I think you are both also right. it's something about the Mexican culture that rallies a lot of support for l their boxing heros. A Canelo fight is more than just the fight it's a reason to have a party and BBQ with your friends and family and get drunk on the 5th of May or 16th of September. No other sport and culture's pride aligns this perfectly on two days out of the year.

no idea and i dont think he makes them much money anymore. how can they make money when he takes 30-35 million guarantee to fight bums who have no fans. boxing PPV sales are way down from 10 years ago, people arent buying like they used to. canelo doesnt sell 1 million. i dont think he even makes the 500k range they claim. and at 80 dollars a PPV, they would have to sell 447k JUST to pay canelo alone not even his opponent, undercard, venue ect. they HAVE to be losing money these days

He's been a prolific fighter, and that type of boxer is disappearing, replaced with annual fights or less from other boxers. And at this point he's kind one of the last of the old guard. Who's the future? Inoue? Great but small, and little guys just don't impress fans the same way as bigger fighters. Crawford? He hasnt been busy anyway and is on the way out. So are many others, most of whom don't have as many fights as Canelo. Ennis? All talk and no, or very little, action. So are lots of younger guys these days. Canelo is now running on the strength of who he fought before, and that he outlasted many. I'm not a big Canelo fan, but I respect what he's done and think he's now probably the symbol of a dying breed of fighter, like JCC or somebody similar.

Oscar De La Hoya made him a star. It is such a shame he is so ungrateful to delahoya. If it wasn't for De La Hoya no one would know him.

Canelo says it’s all about getting the money right for him. He can’t stand giving people their best pay day. He resents it. He says everyone wants pay day from him. Yet that’s all he ever admits to wanting himself. At least underdogs rise up to fight him. Sure they get paid, but the least possible. Canelo makes big bucks fighting big underdogs. Dragging people up. He needs opponents to get paid. Oscar new that and he was easy to make fights with. His resume looks better and better over the years no matter what you think of him. They could probably pay to see him shadow box. A champion doesn't earn the right to fight bums consistently. He can do that if he is not holding any major belt, but clogging a whole division with his nonsense, I don't think so.
