Haneys lack of athelticim was seen in this fight vs Ryan Garcia. He finally fought someone around his size and around his age. The speed difference was seen. The power difference was huge.
Haney has good but not great speed/reflexes. He has very little power for top level boxing.
Haney is not the athlete that Ryan Garcia, Shakur Stevenson, Gervonta Davis or Teofimo Lopez are. Those guys all have elite speed, explosive and/or power.
Haney was moved well and is a good fighter but hes not this pound for pound star that Eddie Hearn and some of Haneys fans made him out to be.
How about he just got the brakes beat off him by Ryan Garcia.
Why do you think that happened? Is it because of Ryan Garcia's unbelievable technique and ring IQ?
Aren't some of these takes a little reactionary? People always complain about fighters protecting the "0", and yet here we have a significant proportion of the forum writing off a former undisputed champion because of one decision loss.
He made some tactical errors, one of which possibly came before they set foot in the ring. He's still going to be a difficult fight for people in his division.
This. but it's still NSB. Which means everyone is either a bum or an ATG. Nothing in between. Those are the choices.
Haney is the perfect opponent for Garcia who is a bit loose defensively. He can fire away with no worries
100%. If Haney was able to counterpunch than Garcia would have a real problem

- - Eddie gave Heinie an opportunity, that's what promoters do. What happens next determines Heinie future role in boxing. Whatever happens he won't melt like Garcia has been doing.
And guess what? Heinie still Boxrec #1 because of his opposition and title successes. Guy who needs to prove himself is Garcia who has all the natural attributes a fighter could ask for but for brains.

Haney's main attribute is his ability to cut 25+ pounds.
Hes not particularly great at anything. His chin sucks, no power, hes not that fast but tries to fight in a style like he is fast.
Completely agree with all this
Devin doesnt have the twitch muscle. When a athlete like Loma puts the pressure on you changing leveles going in and out fast he panics and his only form of defense is going for a clinch. With Ryan being big he couldn't do that. He couldn't outmuscle him.

Exactly he was just a big guy for his weight class who was moved very carefully

u suddenly become worse at everything when u lose
Except I said all of these things before the fight. I made a thread about how Ryan Garcia has a good chance of winning.
Also been very public about how I thought Lomachenko really beat Haney and how Devin Haney is overrated and not at Shakur Stevensons level
I don't buy this at all. You can come up with a strategy for any traits esp vs a guy who've fought 6x & beaten 3x already.
I think Devin just made this fight too personal & was too ego driven is a big part of why he had so few answers & lost. A reasonable strategy vs a left hook guy with power isn't to seem totally unprepared for the left hook & to be chasing him down as much or more than hes coming at you.
It could be. The ego may have played a part in it but when Haney got caught he was always set aside for the last one when he got caught trading. Dont think it was a pride thing as much as a styles make fights thing
I think he's a good athlete but he's not a natural fighter. Reminds me somewhat of a tiny version of Wlad with a very tiny amount of power. He needs the fight to follow a script. He knows his lines very well but can't adlib when his opponent goes off script. Remember his panic when tiny Loma started doing things they had not rehearsed for.
Devin Haney only started to try to come towards Ryan Garcia once Garcia caught him and Haney realized he couldn't keep Ryan Garcia off of him like he does with most of his opponents.
Was it because he realized he couldn't keep him off him or was it because he wanted to hurt him back and prove a point because of his pride?
They say don't chase a puncher. I think Devin let ego get in the way of his optimal strategy vs Ryan.
He couldn't use his optimal strategy against Ryan Garcia. Ryan Garcia is too athletic for that.
Devin trying to come to Ryan, being the guy forcing the fight and knock out Ryan was his downfall. Pretty similar when Teo was trying to put away Kambosos early and we all know what happned there
Devin Haney only started to try to come towards Ryan Garcia once Garcia caught him and Haney realized he couldn't keep Ryan Garcia off of him like he does with most of his opponents.
Was anyone hyping him as a great athlete? Hes been more of a hardwork & dedication guy to me. Hes the hard worker not the athlete or natural talent guy.
Idek that I think of Devin having some high level ring IQ or whatever. I just think they get the ideal strategy that they put into their training for camp to be able to implement it on fight night. Which was why I was surprised he kept getting hit & hurt by Ryan's left hook. I figured if they were prepared for anything going into fight night it was the left hook.
It was surprising that Haney got hit with a big left hook the early into the fight. 30 seconds in.
