In principle I do agree with you. In fact, I - for one - had suggested to use Hitchins vs Lemos for this weekend's Pick Em.
However, from what I have seen until now, the most decisive factor which decreases the number of participants is not the presence (or less) of certain fights, but the inevitable loss of interest in the game when one begins to see that he/she can't win, either due to a series wrong picks, or to personal issues preventing them from playing regularly.
In a nutshell, it's impossible to apply the "it ain't over until it's over" motto in the Pick Em League. Some people keep playing even if they can't win; someone else just lacks the will to follow the game in absence of an aim.
Yes Tata out of interest I checked how many people picked this past weekend - 36 out of 51 - so 15 couldn't spare 5 minutes for whatever reason
Hitchins vs Lemos was two young contenders on a major platform that most BoxingScene posters can actually watch, 5 stars on BoxRec, and hinted at being closer than the odds might have suggested. And in fact ended up being very close.
Excluding fights like that from the Pick ‘Em will attract less participants in the game in my opinion.

Well .... there is that -- good point! :boxing:
As you can tell - I'm not a fan of Boxrec rankings. At the end of last year I suggested we have more 'pick-em' fights ie. according the betting odds more weight - because otherwise many of the fights are too one-sided and there isn't much of a pick-em element as there's an 80-90% chance that the favorite will win (again I only speak for myself) .
All input is good - and i'd say that your comment and others can sometimes get lost/forgotten in the weekly pickem threads so it'd be useful to copy it on the master-thread for the year as well.

Part of the stated criterion for Pick ‘Em was 4 and 5 star BoxRec fights. Arbitrarily deciding whether or not fights actually deserve their BoxRec ranking was not part of the criterion.

and so? Does it deserve to be a 5* BoxRec fight? As far as I know 5* is the maximum awarded by Boxrec. So Bud vs Spence Usyk vs Fury were/will be 5* fights. So according to Boxrec the Hitchens fight is on the same level as Bud/Spence. We can take Boxrec's word as gospel or use some discernment here.
Also, Lemos is +562 - not a great pickem albeit just inside the +600 arbitrary limit

Seriously, WTF?
That is a 5 star BoxRec fight.
