Is there any pro boxing debut that tops Ngannou beating Fury, or is that now solidified in the history books as the greatest professional boxing debut of all time? The scorecard robbery was predictable, and Ngannou wasn't allowed to fight for the titles because it was his first pro boxing match. But in reality he just beat a decent heavyweight world champ. Most would agree that Fury is probably slightly better than former champs like Bermane Stiverne or Charles Martin. Only politics and procedure prevented Ngannou from being regarded as a heavyweight champ today.
All-time greatest pro debut?
Francis did so, so well. But he is a fight champion, so its not as if hes a theorist who never fought like DK Yoo is. Even boxers start with 8 rounders before they think they can go 10 or 12 rounds. So im sure Francis was pacing himself in the fight in case he ran out of steam.
if we consider two fights instead of one, Lomachenko could have been an example. Beat an experienced, credible opponent in his debut, lost by a hair against a probably juiced Orlando Salido in only his second fight.
Lomachenko is one of the greatest amateur boxers of all time with a record of 396-1, and two Olympic gold medals to his credit. Ngannou had ZERO amateur or pro boxing experience coming into the match with Fury. There’s absolutely no comparison whatsoever. It’s astounding and perplexing, really, how Tyson could’ve allowed such a man to give him the least bit of trouble.
My biggest question is how would Ngannou do against AJ, Wilder, Zhang, or even Uysk? Perhaps Fury was just that far gone and underprepared that it made Ngannou look so much better? Ngannou missed most of his big punches. Too much is being made of the knockdown. Fury looked like shyt but it's also apparent his heart is no longer in the sport. He took this fight as a money grab and underestimated Ngannou. Let's see how Ngannous does against other opponents and then we can form a more accurate assessment of his abilities.
How a man who’s never had a fight could compete neck and neck with the heavyweight champ of the world is hard to understand. Whether Fury trained seriously or not. I can’t understand. And we’re not talking about a great amateur boxer with tons of experience. It’s one of the most impressive things I can remember.
You can't understand? I can. Boxers are put on too high a pedestal and can't live up to expectations.
Fury is 35. And he's put his body through the ringer over the years. It's very possible that he's just completely shot.
He looked terrible. More flabby than I remember. Slow, poor footwork, no reactions. People wondered whether he hadn't trained for the fight.
But then I went back and looked at the Whyte and Chisora fights. He looked similar. But the level of competition wasn't high.
Then I looked at Wilder 3 and saw the same. Again, it was good enough to beat Wilder, but he looked slower and fatter than he once looked.
It's possible that he actually did train for Ngannou, but it's getting harder and harder for a man who is just past his prime due to the abuse of his body. It's possible that Wilder 2 was the last time Fury was in any kind of shape and that was 3 and a half years ago. He might be well past his prime and nobody noticed for 3 years because he rarely fights.
It's funny because 'PRIME' Tyson Fury still didn't beat anyone other than Klitschko.
Fury and his fans call Wilder a bum, talentless dosser, a nobody.
With that being said, Fury hasn't done a damn fucking thing.
Bud, gervonta, Inoue, usyk, Nell, lomachenko would all do well in their debut if they fought a champ. But boxers traditionally don't go straight to champ like Francis did.
Probably. But also, the most novices fight no hopers in non-televised fights. He had a privilege to take on the champ.
And, Fury is probably totally shot, that is also true.
Yeah I think so.
Also, if the judges had given the W to Francis, I think it tops the Tyson-Douglass upset considering Buster was an actual professional boxer while Francis was not.
100%, douglas was a legit contender, he just beat berbick and mccall, the betting odds were only crazy because it was prime mike tyson who was knocking out everyone, but douglas wasnt a journeyman bum or anything.

Size, athleticism, strength etc can go a long way tbh. Ngannou is probably the most athletic and strongest dude Fury ever faced, and is a naturally big hitter and very sturdy. And although he hasnt had boxing experience, the MMA experience has to count for something. Theres a LOT of boxers out there with like 15-0 type records who still havent fought guys who can hurt you with punches the way several of Ngannous MMA opponents could.
I'll say yes, considering the fact that a lot of boxing debuts aren't even televised and are almost always against no hopers. I bet most fans (myself included) never even watched the debuts of most of their favorite fighters, even if there's a video of it.
Ngannou put on a great showing against the number one man in the division, dropped him and only lost by a point.
Wild sensationalism. Fury looked about as bad as he ever looked. Was meeting and greeting celebrities and sports stars, late into the night on the eve of the fight. Spent large portions of fight week entertaining rich Arabs too. Heavyweight is also the likeliest division for an MMA fighter to be able to transition into successfully. Ngannou has always excelled at 'striking', most of his MMA fights have ended on the feet. He has impressive fundamentals, on top of that he is an immovable object, punches like a mule, and is not scared to trade punches in range. Also had great cardio. He kept it competitive and had his moments, but lost. Against a Tyson Fury that hasn't been seen since the first John McDermott fight.
It's not that hard to believe.
Remember how Wilder got a draw against Fury in their 1st fight, and BoxingScene was calling Wilder one of the most unskilled champs ever.
All you have to do is knock Fury down 1 or 2 times. Win a couple of the early rounds, and get a few close/ even rounds and you can beat him by decision.

Excellent analysis. I concur on most everything you wrote.
