Well, Canelo and Oscar Valdez are anyway. As of late I notice a tendency from both of them to just want to set up and land that one big shot. Combinations and fluidity have fallen by the wayside.
And missing with those big shots is also causing them to get winded (not that Canelo’s stamina was ever that stellar anyway), along with all the weightlifting they seem to like to do in that camp which doesn’t help I think.
Eddy Reynoso seems to be regressing as a trainer instead of getting better.
Maybe he could throw for volume if he stopped loading up 20 power punches a round. Not every punch has to be a kill shot.
he;s not built like that.
he's built for hooks and power. not straight punches, speed or volume. he will get outboxed if he doesn't visibly hurt his opponents. eg, even mid guys like Lara and Trout would've won without the visible damage Canelo delt out.
Valdez was looking for the shot all night the KOed Berchelt. The few times he let his punches flow he did better, don't know why the corner didn't tell him to stop loading up so much.
Canelo reflexes are on the decline, he is not getting away from punches like he used to and now is relying on power to bail him out.
That's a very salient point you are making here. In addition, I don't see Canelo stopping Jermell Charlo either. That fight has distance written all over it because they are both counter punchers. Neither guy likes to take the lead.
I think Jermell is a very live underdog in that fight.
Canelo's style is a low volume aggressive counter-puncher.
He can't throw volume.
So he loads up on 20 power punches a round.
That`s why he lost to Bivol and he would lose again.

I think it’s more apparent now that both are on the decline, more so Oscar who’s just had way too much mileage and and quite frankly was never a top shelf fighter.
Reynoso only got praised because of Canelo
I think he’s horrible trainer and it starting to show
He has no plan B for Canelo when fights are not going his way and it shows

When you’re younger it’s easier to criticize others, not expecting anyone to understand this, but when a boxer is older it’s harder to dance around throwing combinations ( wasted energy). We just don’t have that energy anymore. What older men aren’t missing is POWER so we tend to give everything into our punches when an opportunity arises. We also loose our good “trigger” so we are always ”waiting” for that perfect shot that doesn’t always come. We also can’t get out of the way of a punch. We loose some of our defensive reflexes and some of us don’t care if we get hit as long as we can get our shot off. All this is a sign we need to RETIRE.
I have a 2 hour communite every Friday and Monday so looking for some good podcats. Currently I listen to ESPN PTI and Around the horn if can't listen to Montero Boxing. Ill check out Gordon and conney. I used to listen to boxing fights but these dudes now SUK!!! Nothing like when my gpa grew up and they huddled by the radio...
Shawn Porter's podcast is fun.
It does look lazy. Like he’s trying to conserve energy…and then he ends up winded anyway!
I don’t know if they need to get Chepo Reynoso more involved again or what the problem is.
I don't know what's the issue, but from the outside looking in, I think they need to bring back the focus on head and waist movement.

- - Yeah, Canelo gonna take advice from JellyRoll……
canelo is on his way out.. he cant fight like before because he doesnt have the stamina so now he loads up and try to get his opponent out early... if he fights like before, then he'll be giving up the early rounds and he doesnt have the stamina now to turn it on in the 2nd half of the fight.
Usyk too. Usyk changes the speed and power of the shots. really fuks with people cause some of the shots get through but theyre really weak and the opponent gets complacent then lets through a more powerful shot.
james toney used to do that
It's true, Canelo really looked his best boxing like he did against GGG2, Jacobs, Smith, Plant and Saunders. This style of covering up with a high guard and throwing haymakers looks lazy. Like they don't want to put in the work to keep those evasive and counter punching skills sharp.

Anybody can fight 4 times a year if they have a morons willing to overpay for mediocre opponents. Nothing to brag about
To be fair most boxers are overpaid and they fight bums once every year.
Valdez was really telegraphing those hooks last night too. You could literally see him winding them up.
Yep he tried too hard to land hard instead of just boxing, this is where Shakur would be different because he would be landing all those wide shots in flow snappy accurate, Oscar has the skills he just chose to fight him looking for a stoppage, everything he threw was hard as he could and it backfired because they wasn't landing and what did had no effect.
Canelo had 4 fights in one year (up to Caleb Plant) and did VADA testing for all those training camps. And he won all 4 fights by knockout or stoppage. So I don’t think it’s that.
Just because they passed VADA tests doesn't mean they aren't still taking PED's.
