Roy weighed 193 pounds when he fought Ruiz at HW. I don’t know what he was actually weighing as a lhw but I’m thinking the difference wasn’t a lot.
fighters just age differently
Tarver beat Roy Jones easy what fight were you watching. The first fight was pretty damn competitive imo one of Roy Jones best Roy Jones, outboxed Tarver in the middle of the ring landing nice body punches all night, but took a lot of punishment from Tarver when he fell to the ropes. In the championship rounds much respect to Roy Jones the speed/reflexes was gone then but he dug deep and outgutted Tarver down the stretch. Thats what true champs do when their superpowers are gone.
Full credit to Tarver for getting the ko on Roy in the rematch he put in that work in the first fight and the damage had already been done on Roy.
Given the same situation Tarver made a move up to heavy to do a Rocky flick, came back down and had absolutely nothing for Bernard Hopkins. He made Hopkins look like Ali in there. Showed no heart no desire no sense of urgency at all. He could not use going up and down in weight as an excuse because he knew he chided Roy Jones for saying the same thing. Summing up Tarver, Roy Jones was his pinnacle really and after the Hopkins loss never really got back on top.
Hopkins at the tail end fought one of best young lions in Kovalev tried every vet trick in the book to beat him, but took a ton of clean shots in the process in a losing effort, then was easily ko'd in his next fight. Hopkins was a textbook fighter good defense ring iq and the whole 9, still was deposited out the ring on the top of his head by an ordinary fighter by anyone's standard.
Point is history showed us Tarver was a good fighter who had Roys number and not much else, but Hopkins and Roy, different stylewise, but all time great fighters who were willing to stick their chin in there to get the win when what made them great had diminished.
It was because Roy went from 175 to HW to 175 all within a year , you cant play with weight like that, and once Tarver capitalized on that big mistake the first time he had a strong mental edge over Roy, it was also a hard loss and the end of Roy he was never the same after it.
Tarver was a good fighter, Bhop was better.
They keep bowing off the heavyweight factor as if that was a walk in the park. I'm going to go with Ruiz and Arreola are about similar as belt holders. Now, let's have Beterbiev or Bivol balloon up, survive the fight, and come back down all in a year and see what happens if fought say ramirez. We've seen guys have issues just going up one and down.
Styles make fights
Hopkins was always better than Roy from a fundamental and technical point
- - Poppy was the most cowardly so called great I can recall, a Major League Sissyboy as well. Roy made him quit their rematch, but the ref wouldn't allow it and gave Sissy time to dry his eyes, but he was still bawlin' his eyes out at the end.
It has nothing to do with Hopkins. It has to do with WHY Roy beat everyone so easily. He was a freak of speed and power. He never needed to learn how to box properly. He was always unorthodox. The day he lost his speed he became more average.

simple.....
Roy came down from heavyweight to fight Tarver.
Tarver came down from heavyweight to fight hopkins (rocky movie)
Jones came down from HW and was never the same fighter. He relied too much on his superior reflexes during his prime. His reflexes weren’t the same after HW, and he never made the necessary adjustments.
Roy is overrated. Relied so much on flashy moves and youthful tricks he aged like milk, became low level almost overnight once he tasted his first KO loss.
Hopkins was better but still an anomaly. Some tend to forget he started boxing very late in life, saving himself a lot of wear and tear his contemporaries were already dealing with in the pro's. In the end, they're all decided by their milage not so much the age number.

Roy relied on his athleticism and once he started slowing down it was over. Hopkins had a crazy high in-ring IQ and didn’t rely on superhuman speed and reflexes to win fights. That style ages much, much better.
There's so many factors, but the main ones to me are the styles and Bernard's longevity. Hopkins is cagier and quicker than Tarver at 175lbs, where as Jones, for as talented and skilled as he was, was not so cagy and more vulnerable to Tarver's tactics. Jones obviously suffered a drastic drop from his peak when he started losing while Bernard aged better than any other ATG as far as I can remember.
I know this sounds ridiculous, but I think it’s because while his opponents were slowing down, Bernard Hopkins actually got better with age and probably peaked in his early forties.
