That Ben Shalom has absolutely nothing about him, but with the Sky machine behind him it’s almost impossible to fail- just ask Eddie Hearn.
They’re 2022 schedule is off to a great start: Eubank vs Williams, Khan vs Brook and Taylor vs Catterall. All those shows will do big numbers. The takeover has begun.
The tug-of-war between promoters/networks never ends. As long as the best fight the best, it shouldn't matter. Unfortunately, that's simply not the way it works.
I'm only speaking for me but I'm subscribed to dazn without being a matchroom fan/cheerleader.
They did good right before the pandemic started and now have started to get things rolling again. In December, they show7 cards. It's good value for what I'm paying (15€ in germany, but we also generally dont have access to other boxing cards. Figueroa vs Fulton was 10€ or $ for a single card on fite.tv)
I like what dazn can potentially become though. A lot dont care but they basically build a boxingscene for italy and spain. You would otherwise never hear of those fighters.
I believe the next stops are australia and japan, would have wished for dazn to get into german boxing since it's more or less dead right now.
Boxing fans will obviously sub too, I’ve subbed for the bigger fights like Canelo and stuff but I imagine the majority of subscribers are Matchroom fans though.
I’d actually like to see DAZN succeed, I’m the most anti-Sky guy you could meet, but I just don’t see DAZN being able to compete with Sky in the UK. And as for boxing, I think Sky/Boxxer will inevitably surpass DAZN/Matchroom in the not so distant future. It’s very similar to when Frank left with all the big names and started up Boxnation. People doubted Sky could compete with a green and inexperienced promoter in Hearn but look what happened. It’s a matter of time IMO…
For what it's worth I don't think they will make a run at the EPL. I think they'll make a run at overseas leagues to show in the UK, and have a go at the EPL in other countries without a dominant broadcaster in that space.
I'm pretty sure that's the model right now. They don't need to dominate any individual country.
Sky can dominate UK boxing and yet Matchroom can still have the greater viewing figures through DAZN.
I’d love them to go for Serie A, La Liga or even Bundesliga. I remember Serie A on Channel 4 as a kid and Sky showed La Liga up until a few years back. I’d probably subscribe if they picked up one of those two and showed regular games.
I don’t think they’ll ever get close to Sky in terms of viewing figures in the UK. Not anytime soon anyway, most fellas over 40 wouldn’t even know how to subscribe to DAZN. I’d almost guarantee Eubank vs that scrub in Newcastle on Sky did better numbers than any DAZN card in the UK. As I said in the OP, DAZN just isn’t able to reach the wider audience in UK.
This thread was specifically about the UK man so pretty much everything you’ve posted is irrelevant. The only product DAZN show in the UK is Matchroom boxing and virtually nobody is interested besides Matchroom fans. They need to widen their product portfolio in the UK ASAP if they want to compete with Sky.

1) i explained the way sky sports subscription works. A lot of people just cba ending their subscription normally and just allow money to drain out of their bank balance for channels they barely watch. it was the same way for me for ages. I was going to end my sky sports account until sky sports picked up Matchroom US cards. Then when dazn came with the £1.99 to show their US cards, i ended my sky sports subscription. During global lockdown, many people in the UK ended their sky sports contracts and never returned.
dazn is just much easier to deal with and costs 1/3rd of the sky sports sub fee.
So already you have a weak point.
2) even if sky sports push the boat out and spend money, we've seen frank warren doing better than matchroom uk before aswell..and all eddie had to do was casually go and sign warrington and zelfa barret off them...and with yarde and dubois's losses, queensbury went back to old ways. So just because you see one side appearing to do better doesnt really touch the surface of how eddie will be making his own moves down the line.
in fact whilst matchroom are focused on growing globally, they'll have to sacrifice the uk side, but that doesnt mean a lot...when the money comes in eddie could just take the established names off them. it all rests on the growth of global boxing through dazn though. so far he seems to be doing well..like that card on the weekend.
the uk market is saturated anyway, growth has to come globally..and when it happens, the money trickles back to the UK anyway. Dazn are better placed right now.
3) i might be wrong, but im not trying to 'lie' here, ok. aside from curiousity on how dazn operate..i dont really care if they succeed or don't. it isnt my fight.
I was actually mistaken because its been a while since i checked their accounts, i was looking at the earlier yrs. . it is not exactly 'double the money on their investment', but they've increased their investements each year twice over...
their end of year 2017 account
$256.9m revenue
they spent $246.1m aquiring new rights fees
their end of year 2018 account
$497.7m revenue (ok somewhat off 'doubling their evenue from rights fees costs)
they then spent $528.5m aquiring rights fees
their end of the year 2019 account
$877.7m revenue
i dont know what their rights fees entail, but it's obv they're spending more and turning over even more each year..and that's when they were relatively small time.
clearly they know what their doing?
btw i dont feel matchroom need to do a lot. they can't control what others choose to do. if sky/bt sports choose to outspend dazn, why should dazn make knee jerk reactions?
that was marku's last fight with them. he's signed with matchroom otherwise.
riakhporhe, eubank jr, hughie fury, they're kind of the outcasts. im sure the likes of bjs will switch over too, anyone who has beef with eddie.
also eddie signed olympians didnt he? lauren price, gold medalist. Ben whittaker.
he has johnny fisher and john hedges too. seems he's making solid moves. you're just more impressed by flashy established names.
No I mean Matchroom fans, they only show Matchroom shows and the odd GBP show. From a UK perspective unless you’re a fan of Matchroom you’re unlikely to subscribe consistently.
DAZN should look at showing PBC cards in the UK, that would be a good addition to their portfolio and they already show them in other countries. I’d add to TR shows too but they already got snapped up by Sky.
If you’re entering the multimedia sports sector in the UK you’re competing with Sky. There’s no two ways about it.

Their definitely are man, you see it all over social media, there’s guys who only engage with Matchroom stuff or PBC stuff etc etc.
The DAZN model globally is fine, they’re making inroads in a lot of countries but they’re still firmly on the outside looking in over here. They need more content, I expect them to make a run at the football fights whether EPL, UCL or one of the top foreign leagues.
In regards to boxing scene in the UK, Hearn clearly has the best stable but he’s on the worst platform, you can already see the Sky resurgence and it won’t be long before they’re dominating the UK boxing scene again. As I said it reminds me of Frank going to Boxnation.
For what it's worth I don't think they will make a run at the EPL. I think they'll make a run at overseas leagues to show in the UK, and have a go at the EPL in other countries without a dominant broadcaster in that space.

Eddie will tell you it’s because he’s a great promoter.
It’s about Sky Sports and always has been. You could put a monkey in charge there, if they have an exclusive deal with Sky Sports then most of the top boxers are going to go there.
Exactly mate… it was the same with Warren, was the same with Matchroom and it’ll be the same with Boxxer.
I hate Sky but they dominate the sports market in this country.
I could definitely see it, they’ll start signing guys from Eddie too. There’s no loyalty in boxing. I remember Frank leaving Sky with DeGale, Groves, Bellew, Cleverly, Burns, Mitchell, Brook etc. Every single one of them left him and went back to Sky eventually.

Competition is always good and Sky has some boxing heads running the operation. If they can get Warren's stable once their deal with BT Sport expires and if they keep Joshua? That would be really good and give Matchroom/Hearn the competition that is needed.
One thing though, and it is kind of off topic...But man the upcoming talent in the UK isn't very good right now. There has been a sizeable drop compared to 5-10 years ago. What is going on there? Some nice prospects from the Olympic class turning which will help but overall more young talent is needed in the UK. Then you are going to have a bunch of sh^t main events and boxing will take a hit for that in the UK.
I know people talk schitt on here, but surely there aren't really Matchroom fans, PBC fans etc? If a channel shows a good fight, people watch.
I don't know who is connected to PBC in the UK. In Aus we get some on Foxtel/Kayo and some on DAZN. Historically some fights simply didn't get shown. I think that's DAZN's model - they pick up whatever makes sense. In a mature market like the UK they'll face stiff competition from boxing broadcasters.
That's what I mean about not really competing with Sky. They'd be crazy to base a business strategy on defeating a very established broadcaster in a market where boxing isn't going to grow much more. But around the world they can pick up cheap broadcast rights and find millions more viewers.
I think they'll happily trail Sky in the UK. They'll have their Matchroom fights and a few others. It won't determine their success though.
And somewhere down the line they might become the biggest sports broadcaster in the world... even without being the biggest in the UK or US. You can completely see how they could do it.
They don't need to compete for EPL in England, or NFL in the US, or AFL in Australia... they can pick up sports for international markets and be a player in every country.
Until they get bought out. By ESPN or similar.

I don't think they're trying to compete with Sky yet. DAZN is pretty much a start-up - been live in the UK for no time at all.
As for the whole 'irrelevant if it's not about the UK' discussion, I'm sure DAZN don't see things that way. They're a global business. They're selling Matchroom fights all over the world. The UK will be an important market, but there are plenty of people around the world they're targeting.
Also don't forget how startups measure success. Growth and retention. They're achieving that.

Those are only for local consumption.
DAZN is global. Hearn is in the right place.
I mean how many Khan vs Brook do you have?
Williams vs Eubank? Who would want that anywhere except in the UK?
Come on man, stop dreaming.
Isn't that the point of the thread? Location seemed pretty specific.

the wider fanbase is global, the UK is saturrated. the EPL has global viewership for example, that's where the money now comes from and Sky sports/bt sports pay billions for it, not for the measely little british viewers but so they can sell the rights globally for profit.
Yet this model isnt working for boxing and whilst sky sports would historically sell the rights globally, no one in the rest of the world cares about british level fights. sky sports have to pay money for espn's content here for their uk subs, but what about outside of that?
don't get me wrong, when i talk of global viewership, it's going to take a long long time to gain traction globally.
there's a reason eddie has spanish guys and mexicans winning on his cards.
boxnation was a good idea, it just didnt have anyone behind it and certainly no in depth research. dazn have systems in place and leonard blavatnik.
for what it's worth, i looked at dazn's past accounts. Say they'd spend $250m on broadcasting rights deals. They would then turnover $500m the following year. Then they'd spend $500m on broadcasting rights and turnover $1b. So clearly that turnover is coming from somewhere.
they have champions league rights, serie A, bundesliga in various territories....so hardly just a boxnation and can crossover to build boxing in those places. I imagine it would take a long time..but it also took the EPL 10-15 yrs before it really took off.

I’m talking bigger picture. You’ve got to understand the big money comes from the wider fanbase not the boxing fans.
DAZN is essentially just a new version of Boxnation for Matchroom fans.

I thought Eubank was a Wasserman fighter? eitherway with Dazn/Matchroom, it means sky willhave lost subs. £25 a month for sky, or £8 a month for dazn? it's your pick.
personally i prefer dealing with dazn. i sub and unsub any month i like, on the website with ease. absolutely zero hassle. that's how it should be for everything in future.
i always had issues ending my vodafone/o2 contracts for years. Then i switched to giffgaff and never looked back. dazn is like giffgaff in that respect, all online and easy to do, pick and choose whenever you want it and pick the goodybag you like. I hope if dazn pick up other sports someday, that we get that type of option. i wouldnt want to be paying extra for additional sports i have no interest in.
What sky, virginmedia, vodafone etc do, is bad practice and causes stress/anxiety for a lot of people. A hell of a lot of people simply keep away from all of it because they dont want to the hassle of contracts/terms/sales people, long phone calls etc.
It doesnt make one bit of difference that boxxer/sky are doing some okay cards and promoting the crap out of them, that isnt going to be enough to keep fans. their numbers were struggling during covid and didnt pick back up. See a lot of people were subbed long term and didnt want the HASSLE of unsubbing. Personally i used to have a £15 a month deal but i was also subbed to Sky broadband because my mate worked there. the contract had ended but i was allowed to just keep it rolling. I decided to just stick with it when Matchroom US cards were on. As soon as dazn gave us their US cards for £1.99 a month, i called sky and ended my subscription.
When covid lockdown came and sports were cancelled/postponed, many people chose that time to end their contracts and not come back. Now when people are making the choice to come back to anything, boxing fans would rather be subbed to dazn.
Premier league viewing numbers are declining.
america/uk are oversaturated..and dazn are focusing on global growth.
I’m talking bigger picture. You’ve got to understand the big money comes from the wider fanbase not the boxing fans.
