I hear people say that it is due to Spence and Crawford lacking personality but it's not as if AJ, Pacquiao, and Canelo have huge personalities. What is Spence and Crawford lacking that is preventing them from becoming stars like Floyd, Oscar, Tyson...etc
Canelo and AJ have a following due to their their country loving boxing, and their fights are exciting. I wouldn't call them charismatic or having larger than life personality. It's also the promoter's job to promote these fighters. Crawford in particular has a promoter who runs him down publicly and bad mouths him, and don't want to promote him properly, yet he still signs with top rank.... Gervonta tank davis has no charisma and personality, yet TMT promoted him so well, so he is bringing in views as his fights are selling well.
Spence was on the verge but between his accident, recovery and then another injury has held him back. Crawford has not had the right opponents to prop him.
Canelo: Mexican fighters have a big fanbase potential to begin with. Not just from Mexico and the US with Mexican-American, but also Latino/Hispanic community. If you are even a remotely good Mexican fighter, you will have support from Mexico and Mexican Americans.
Anthony Joshua: Boxing really sucks now in America for non-latino fighters. Mayweather was the last popular American fighter. He played the villain well. The popularity of boxing moved from the US to Europe. European boxing fans show their fighters a lot more love than the US does theirs.
Errol Spence: Spence actually does pretty well on PPV for an American fighter in today’s American boxing scene. He averages around 350k PPV buys. He has yet to headline a PPV with an A-side. He has been the A-side of his PPV fights.
What made FLoyd different in your opinion?
Floyd isn’t filled with charisma, but he went out of his way to play the villain and he did it so well. That loud mouth obnoxious money flaunting character post De La Hoya was money.
He created a persona. Bud isn’t doing that. Spence isn’t doing that. Broner tried, and it almost worked, except he sucked as a boxer lol.
If you don’t have the personality, charisma, then make up a character…if you want the fame and fortune bad enough.
think WWE
it is a promoter's job to make the fighter a superstar. If that is not done, then the Promoter isn't doing their job. Everyone doesn't have a superstar personality. Evander didn't. Another thing is that these guys don't fight often and enough on free tv. . I believe that there are fighters who simply aren't superstars these are guys who for a multitude of reasons will never be draws. For example guys like rigondeaux. There isn't a promoter alive who can make him a superstar. if any thing he repels fans instead of attracting them.
What made FLoyd different in your opinion?
Personality and "Money" persona. And the fact that he didn't lose. Adrien Broner could have been as big as Floyd if he kept winning and stopped doing dumb stuff outside the ring
Those three guys have a massive following. Canelo has millions of Mexicans. PAC has millions of Filipinos. AJ has millions of English fans.
Spence and Crawford, Americans just don’t give a damn because they aren’t hip hop/thug/showing off cash enough if they’re black, like Floyd did.
They aren’t white like The Duke at heavyweight. They aren’t Mexican American like De La Hoya.
They’re dry and have no charisma, no personality.
