I hadn't heard anymore of Gonzalez after he had planned a comeback nine years ago: https://www.boxingscene.com/miguel-angel-gonzalez-42-starts-training-comeback--51376
Now it looks like he's in serious trouble, living on the streets with supposed addictions to alcohol and drugs. Julio Cesar Chavez has twitted that he wants to take him into his own rehab clinic.
Is there anyone among the Mexican friends here with more details about this umpteenth sad story? I didn't manage to find anything beside little chunks, and a quick video that reveals very little.
Some of Gonzalez's best can be seen against the late Leavander Johnson (whose name is erroneously spelled as "Levander" in the video).

Thanks for the link. Leavander was from the area I grew up in and I remember reading about his career progression in the local newspaper and watching his fights (completely forgot he fought MAGO). There weren't alot of top-level fighters who were from the area (Leavander, Bruce Seldon, Darroll Wilson, Debind Thapa and a few others that I'm forgetting)....
Leavander ultimately paid the ultimate price and succumbed to injuries suffered in his first title defense against Jesus Chavez.
read the bold. An addict has the responsibility to want to get help
Sure. As I posted earlier, now it looks like he accepted Chavez's offer, which apparently he was refusing before.

I thought the name sounded familiar but couldn't place it at first.
The word around back then was that Gonzalez was the one who ultimately triggered the decline of Cory Spinks. Spinks/Judah 1 could be argued as a robbery depending on how you looked at that fight and Spinks was clearly not happy with the performance.
He would then fight Gonzalez in a near shutout performance, which seemed to make him overconfident going in to the Judah rematch, where prime Spinks got completely wrecked by a declining Zab Judah in a shocker that he never recovered from.
Wasn't Spinks' girlfriend the one that said "when you get stopped by K9 Bundrage it's time to quit!" or something?
I can't remember if she was her, but sure enough it's a great one!
Sad to hear, I didn't see a whole lot of him but remember MAGO when there was talk of a clash with Tszyu and how it would be a serious test for the Australian. I would read articles on him in Ring and other boxing magazines. Hopefully he is able to recover from the demons that haunt him.

sad to hear, remember his fights with DLH n Chavez, remember as a kid knowing DLH would give him a beating, n obviously vs Tszyu, who burst the seen beating Ruelas n Chavez, I'd say Tszyu ended there boxing careers even tho Chavez was done he put the last nail to his boxing coffin
Yes, unfortunately many remember Gonzalez more for his (admittedly important) losses than for the several good opponents he beat.

I read a report in Spanish that says he doesn't want help, there's no work due to the pandamic and he just wants to forget for a while. He also mentions that he has a six-floor apartment and that he's giving everything away after a tremor hit, because if it had collapsed it would have buried everything, so he's going to live with just the basic necessities.
I checked YouTube and now there's a somewhat unclear video according to which someone took Gonzalez to Chavez's rehab facility for real.
Hopefully this story ends well, for a change.
Hate to see it and hear about it. Obviously he was before my time since I'm a relatively recent fan of the sport but I still try to learn my back history and show respect to all fighters. You rarely make threads too so I'll have to check him out.
I have a certain morbid curiosity about boxing's forgetton fighters and can see how it can be frustrating when it feels like you're the only one who still cares.
What a sad situation for MAG. He was a fantastic fighter in his time. Started getting exposure to him in like 92-93 and really liked his style. I hope he can get the help he needs
That's very sad to hear. He was a pretty good fighter for a time.
Yes he was.
It's also sad to see that you appear to be the lone human being on this forum who is interested in him.
