Just wondering what everyone thinks? Is Calzaghe overrated af,or does he deserve to be considered 1 of the top 15 fighters of all time like Boxrec has him rated?
Edit they have him #6 all time
People always go on about how underrated he was...
not for me.
CV is trash
He avoided prime jones. And i dont want to hear people say oh but roy was at 175. Its still a duck, when your division is chit and there is nothign going on then he made the decision to avoid the bigger fight at 175. He certainly didnt mind going to 175 after roy was shot
Yep he totally did enough to win , Bhop was trying to get him into a pawing rhythm with his jab and land right hands like he did to Tarver, which he did effectively in the early rounds but Calzaghe adjusted after four rounds or so and won almost all of the rounds after that, all Hopkins was doing later in the fight was try to spoil it by clinching and faking that he got hit low.
Hopkins didn't do enough to win the fight and 116-111 was the correct card.
I thought calzaghe won back when i originally watched it. But it still wasnt a satisfying win for me. Calzaghe won on activity against an older fighter. hopkins landed the bigger cleaner shots and had a knockdown. but still gave away rounds from very low output. Not unlike his two fights with taylor when he was doing better in some exchanges just way too inactive and then he would always cry at the end of the fight saying he was robbed. Calzghe cant bust a grape and hops has a solid jaw, he should have let his hands go. We saw in the pavlik fight he actually did have stamina when he wanted to. Thats on his fault for thinking judges would just give it to him if he lands 10 shots a round.
I'm going to watch slappy vs hopkins tomorrow and give a breakdown of every round and everyone is welcome to argue it ..it will be up tomorrow get your popcorn ready for finally settling the hopkins vs slappy controversy

Cmon man his name is Calslappy
He definitely doesn't deserve to be in the top 15 of all time
lacy was the definition of a hype job
Eubank was way past it
Jones Was too
Hopkins fight was pretty close some considered it a robbery
Kessler was his best win but hardly steller
The rest of his wins were domestic
Slappy had a padded record
Some fighters reputations get better with time. His has got worse.
That's because people have had the benefit of passing years to assess his totally abysmal record of title defences against bums and cherry-pick wins over faded legends like Bhop and the ghost of RJJ
Not even in the top 150 boxers of all-time let alone top 15, he was basically a glorified BJS.
We have the benefit of hindsight now, but one quick look at some predictions going into the fight will tell you all you need to know. Calzaghe was an underdog going in, justified or not, and he put on a masterclass.
It’s neither here nor there.
He gets credit for the win because Lacy was Top 5, right or wrong.
But there’s a limit to that credit because he’s garbage. We know he’s garbage and he literally has never beaten a ranked fighter in his career.
All east to say all that is in retrospect-
Floyd beat older guys as well- and when cal fought lacie lacie lacie was supposed to be the next big thing.
He's appropriately rated and would probably give ward a good fight given their styles
lol floyd was older than most people he fought in the 2010s

Yeah because he was extremely overhyped for no reason.
Lacy beat no one ranked, looked terrible against Omar Sheika.
He was Top 5, so there’s that. But he was not an elite fighter.

Lacy wasn’t seen as garbage at the time though.

He beat 3 fighters ranked in the Top 5 in the division being fought in throughout his entire career.
One of those being Jeff Lacy who’s garbage.
Thats all there is to know.

Lets analyze,he has 2 top wins over legends albeit controversial win over bhop in some's eyes & Bhop had lost twice to J.Taylor ,& RJJ was already hella washed up & had been ktfo twice in last 6 fights & 3 losses. His only other notable win was v Kessler.
So how exactly does he end up #6 or the legendary status hes given? His Wikipedia page even touts that boxrec rated him 1 of the absolute best of all time
I only saw his fights v Bhop & Jones live so I'm wondering how good was he(skillwise),was he ducked throughout his Prime?
Jeff Lacy was also a notable win because he was actually the underdog going in. It’s hard to believe now but Lacy was supposed to KO Calzaghe in a “passing of the torch” type of fight and Calzaghe flipped the script in a major way. I’m
cant really remember the bhop fight its been so long ago but if he deserved that then he must have been pretty good, i do remember somehow about that time wanting him to fight dawson which i think he should have done really
i think he might have been a bit of a diva, could be wrong, but i do remember him pulling out of fights for what some might call smaller problems, he wanted to be bang on, glenn johnson was a bit miffed at one stage if i remember right, could be doing calzag a dis service here if im wrong, its a while ago
NOWHERE near atg, and would've definitely lost to prime Ward and probably Froch
His only unquestionable solid win was Kessler, who is B level at best
Kessler was a solid boxer whose career didn't pan out all too well due to repeated injuries and later he started to rely on his power and chin a bit too much for my liking , even going into Calzaghe fight he was plagued by hand injuries.
He beat 3 fighters ranked in the Top 5 in the division being fought in throughout his entire career.
One of those being Jeff Lacy who’s garbage.
