During a session at the World Class Boxing Gym in downtown Dallas, Spence said he felt something amiss, stopped the session and stated, "my eye, my eye."
Despite his left eye not being right, Spence told ESPN he sparred again two days later and then, during a prescheduled medical checkup in Dallas the following day, his fears were confirmed as the doctor said Spence's eye looked "like dark clouds."
The eye exam was conducted Aug. 9 by ophthalmologist Dr. Thomas F. Kelly, who told him he couldn't fight and reiterated "You gotta get this fixed ASAP."
The doctor, Spence said, believes the eye injury could stem from the accident and just didn't break at the time. But between two full training camps and one fight (a December 2020 win over Danny Garcia), it's possible that the retina finally broke.
Nevada requires an ophthalmologist exam. Texas, where the Garcia fight took place, only requires an optometrist exam.
"I can't do nothing but walk," Spence says. "I gotta sleep on my left side. I gotta put eye drops in. ... I know I can't spar for probably like two months. But I'm optimistic about when I can start jogging. Hopefully that will be next three weeks or so."
"It's freaking Manny Pacquiao, future Hall of Famer, future legend, undoubtedly top 10 all time," Spence said. "One of the greatest fighters of all time. And I drop out of a fight with him two weeks before the fight? That don't make sense. Not to mention all the money we would make off pay-per-view. I called him out two years ago in the ring. Not like he hand-picked me. I been asking to fight him."

Lucky man, lucky lucky man Errol is...He sparred two days after noticing something off with his eye?? Luckily he was able to get the exam shortly after noticing something being off with his left eye. And Dr. Kelly explains that the injury could have started with the accident and then just recently the retina could have torn. Maybe that's why it wasn't caught before the Danny fight or he didn't notice it himself.
If he can't spar for two or three months, he's not returning until early 2022 at the earliest.
Plenty of people were paying to see Fury fight Wilder also.
Yes, and it was reported that Fury and his camp contracted covid. Is it true? Don't know. But there's not really much to explain about catching that as it's highly contagious. But when Spence pulled out of the Pacquiao fight 11 days before it was to take place, he initially only offered that his retina was torn. Naturally, people are going to want to know when, where how and why.
Honestly, we may never see him fight again. The injury is that serious.
I was never one of the Pac fans to claim Errol ducked Pac or he faked an injury. This was supposed to be a passing of the torch to Errol last Saturday. He knew it and so did Pac.
Why is Spence the only fighter who is required to disclose his medical records to the public? Gtfo
Shit, because we were paying him a grip to see him fight Pacquiao! Or did you forget that?
I was mad initially because I brought tickets and everything but that injury is serious. I don’t think his career will be back to where it was because of his injuries.
If Errol had been transparent about his injury when he pulled out of the fight, there would not have been any doubt. He pulled out 11 days before and just mentioned the specifics 5 days after the scheduled bout.

Derrick James (trainer) on Spence’s eye.
James said. “Fighters have detached retinas often and come back all of the time. We don’t know how it happened and we don’t know when it happened.”
I just found out yesterday when we were in Las Vegas, where we were training. They found something on his exam. Errol never complained about it. It’s something (that was reported to the Nevada State Athletic Commission) during the licensing (exam).

Now I’m suspicious. First it was a small tear. Then detached. Now Spence is directly contradicting his trainer.
Citing the car crash from two years ago is also a convenient excuse. Officially not buying it.
BTW, f*** Bernard Hopkins.
