So this is twice that GBP fighters have fought eliminators for the WBC belt only to turn down title shots for other fights. Garcia beat Campbell in in eliminator and instead of fighting Haney, he signed to fight Fortuna. Then Diaz fought Fortuna to become the mandatory for Haney and he's turning down the title shot to face Garcia.
Don't get me wrong, I like this fight but both fighters passed up or will be passing up title shots.
People can hate on Haney all they want, but fighters continue to side step title shots for other fights. Is this more of a GBP thing and not wanting to give Matchroom a good opponent for Haney or they just don't think their fighters can beat him?
And one last thing about Haney's belt and people passing on fighting him: The corrupt WBC considers Lopez their champion at 135. Why fight Haney? He needs to drop that stupid trinket.
The only issue I have with this is it doesn’t factor in that the top guys are avoiding him.
If Haney loses to lopez or Loma and had to rebuild himself, like living losing to charlo, ok I’m with you . But they refuse to fight him.just like Ryan and jojo.
so Haney is left to fight middle tier guys that want a chance to move up and the bigger payday where he is a huge favorite. He loses those and the networks stop pushing him.
Stevenson is a great sample of my point. He shouldn’t have had to fight that bum. That should’ve been herring. Now if he lost that he’d get no herring and no Valdez, and wouldn’t get any good fights or dates from espn. So he plays it safe and wins but gets killed for it.
These are the choices some of these guys face, which I think really sucks.
The fact that guys are avoiding Devin should in no way change the process, not if he cares about mastering defense while at the same time being crowd pleasing. Like Cus D'Amato constantly drilled into Mike Tyson.
Losing and having to start over is just the risk he has to take.
And personally I don't think it's even that big of a risk. He shouldn't lose to the guys that won't avoid him. They're the perfect testing ground.
But if instead of taking the opportunity to sharpen his sword he's going to play it safe and boring? He'll deserve the lack of fan support he's going to get.
I clearly included Garcia passing up a title shot to face Fortuna. Are you saying there was more money in Garcia vs Fortuna compared to Garcia vs Haney?
Maybe for Jojo there is more money in the Garcia fight than Haney, but all I know is that is now two GBP fighters that passed up a title shot after fighting in an eliminator to become the mandatory.
You have a great point, and it makes sense.
The angle I look at is the belts themselves. Nobody seems to be in such a rush to claim them. They've really become close to meaningless. Some fighters might even be thinking, "I could always win one these dime a dozen belts again later on." They seem to consider money and degree of difficulty first, before belts.
That's part of mastering the craft. He has to pressure test his style and make adjustments. Repeating the process over and over.
If he loses then he loses. That's just a sign that something big needed an overhaul.
Now, if he doesn't care so much about that and is more about protecting the 0? So be it. But fans can't be expected to get excited over him. Look how Tim Bradley ripped into Shakur Stevenson for almost making him fall asleep.

I’m not talking mentality. I agree with you in principle. That said, if he loses, and because he doesn’t generate revenue, the networks are not going to push him because he isn’t losing to a top guy, but a middle tier guy in a huge upset.

JoJo just tweeted that a fight with Haney is also still an option. Maybe Golden Boy are using a Garcia fight as leverage in negotiating with DAZN and Matchroom? That would definitely pressure them to make a better offer.

That's why they go after those title eliminators. Leverage and options.
Good, civil debates/discussions Eastlos ShoulderRoll Mammoth
Appreciate yall.
Likewise man. The good posters on here can disagree with each other on one thread and be in agreement on another thread without batting an eye.
That's not the fighter mentality, Dunn. If you lose then learn and come again.
If he's too scared to take risks and learn from them then he isn't going to improve like he should.
3-5 years down the line he can either be an offensively exciting fighter who has mastered the defensive tactics to keep him safe...or he can be a lukewarm, milquetoast boxer who has mastered the art of stinking out the joint.
Ultimately it's his choice but you only live once. I know which way I would go.

He doesn’t have to but he risks getting caught. Haney isn’t AJ with a huge fanbase where a ko loss is just a blip in the road.
The networks don’t seem to invest in guys wi to a loss because they want casual fans, who unlike us often associate losing with not being worth watching.
also the “ win if you bore the crowd” is controlled by matchmaking. His matchmakers need to continually match him with aggressive come forward guys and brawlers to help build him until he gets the big fight.

LMFAO, the president from the organization Haney holds the belt for recognizes Teo as undisputed. Stop looking foolish it ain’t a good look
Undisputed means there's no dispute, bud. Sulaiman's word only means so much.
Why does he have to lose? If he just fixes the mistakes he stays exciting while improving defensively.
If he takes the "just win even if you bore the crowd" approach then he is destined to stay low reward until a more popular fighter feels like giving him an opportunity.

But if he loses then there is absolutely no incentive for anyone to fight him. So it’s a slippery slope where maybe the best thing to do is keep winning until a guy is forced to fight you.

Only one of the 4 presidents of the sanctioning bodies recognize Lopez as undisputed. 3/4 do not. Don't be foolish around me.

Bivol team already said Zurdo fight has been offered to them but they’re waiting on Canelo. Fast Eddie himself has said Bivol is plan B for Canelo in case the Plant fight falls apart
Perfect, no excuses for the fight not to happen once Canelo/Plant becomes official.
Glad to hear, Bivol vs Zurdo can be a good one!
That's my point. Being high risk isn't the problem.
it's the fact that Haney is also low reward.
That's why I was arguing against all the people that want him to be more safe and boring now after the Linares fight. It's better if he keeps the more exciting style he was using for most of that fight, and tweaks the defensive errors he made.

That's a fair counter argument. None of the fighters you listed are big names though. LIS, let's see what happens with Bivol and Zurdo. It could be as ShoulderRoll said that Garcia's team just didn't think he was ready for Haney and he needed more seasoning and that they keep the Jojo fight in house and have a big Southern Cal showdown.

Man, WBC president himself called Teofimo undisputed multiple times already, only person disputing that is Haney and Hearn everyone else recognizes Teo as undisputed @ 135
