Danny Garcia fought Lucas Matthysse when Matthysse was in his prime at 140. In a recent interview, Danny said Lucas had brain-rattling power the night of their September 2013 showdown in Las Vegas.
After the fight with Matthysse, Garcia was urinating blood and was deaf in one ear for weeks, according to his father and trainer Angel Garcia. In the 11th round, Lucas punched Danny's custom-made mouthpiece out of his mouth, sending it flying. Angel said Matthysse has power. "He flew his mouthpiece out of his mouth," said Angel. "People don't realize that's a custom mouthpiece that I have to pry off with both hands and will cause the gums to bleed when I pull it off."
Danny gave Lucas props, saying he punches harder than Errol Spence Jr. and Keith Thurman.
That was the fight that rattled Garcia. He played it safe for a long time before he upped his opposition and he still had questionable victories with lesser fighters.
Post Matthysse, Danny has fought Peterson, Thurman, Porter and Spence. Some of his tune up fights are not necessary and just flat out bad, but overall Danny has continued fighting top competition at 147 as he did at 140. And honestly if you are to eventually fight everyone like Danny has, some tune ups are okay. Just would be better if he fought three times a year and mixed in an inferior opponent here and there.
Always interesting to hear these claims straight from the fighters themselves. As fans we can speculate all day who hits the hardest, but I prefer to hear personal testimony from those who took the punches.
People can say whatever they want but Matthysse is unquestionably the hardest hitting 140 lber of the past decade. Stupid stupid power, Danny has an absolute chin of iron to take shots not just off Matthysse but prime Thurman, Porter and Spence without blinking
No surprises here
This is why Danny started ducking tough fights during years, fighting the likes of Rod Zalka and Malignaggi instead
until he finally found his balls back and fought Thurman
Matthyse was a brutal puncher, and a force to reckon with
Until he had that war with the also brutal puncher Provodnikov
that grueling battle ended both guys' primes, and both became washed up overnight, they were never the same again
too bad, as both were very entertaining fighters to watch

Believable, he had disgusting power for his size.
I still remember that shot clear as day and wondering how the hell he stayed up. That guy has some chin on him, that shot would of knocked out a horse.
