Canelo is great don't get me wrong, but it also exemplified everything wrong with British boxing and why our fighters only make true elite/p4p level once a decade if we are lucky. Smith is a fighter who has had every advantage given to him his entire career and has been matched purposefully to ensure a 100% record and milk as much money and hype out of his career as possible. He lost to John Ryder who has lost to a few good domestic level fighters. He was slow and cumbersome tonight and for a man of his size had nothing that could even slow Canelo let alone hurt him. He wasn't even good enough to execute his game plan if running away properly. This is a man who has been billed his entire career as one of the best British fighters around. The real deal. Andrade said it in the first or second round, he wasn't trying to win. The reality is that one of the best we have to offer looked like a trash can in their tonight. He was there to survive, he took no risks and wasnt prepared to even try and push back against the much smaller man. Was there really much difference in this performance and his brothers? If anything Liam looked like he was trying harder to win. John Ryder must be sitting there thinking is this what I got robbed for? British boxing is and always will be about creating an illusion of greatness to sell a product. We have a much smaller pool of talent and in order to maximise profits we rely on smoke and mirrors to churn out hype job after hype job. It isn't about producing the best fighters possible, it's about milking a product/fighter for all his worth before he gets exposed and people realise it's all hype. How can world champion at larger weight not even believe himself to win. Stupidity Australia as one example is a big sporting nation of "tough guys" they have half our population would you say their boxing has half the depth of ours? Absoloutley not. I think the culture of stopping fight before they need to be stopped over there has resulted in fighters that are scared of digging down in the trenches. I’m not too sure about that But there is something about early stoppages. It’s the spectre of Watson vs BBBC still haunting the sport

The problem with this thread is that it’s looking at this totally one sided. The UK has had so many world champions in relative terms to the likes of the US that shouldn’t we be asking the question; how does the UK produce so many World Champions?
