I'm a fan of both fighters, and I just got around to watching their fight. Before watching, I read that it was very controversial, as Sugar controlled all aspects in the ring. I read that Hagler was the aggressor for the most part and was landing the harder shots. But I just watched the fight and I don't see how Hagler won or even got close. In the first five rounds, I gave it all to Leonard except for 1, although there were 2 rounds that were iffy and could be given to Hagler. And then from round 6-12, even though Hagler went to his usual Southpaw, I still thought SLR dominated and I only gave Hagler the 8th (?) and the last round even though it could've gone to SLR too. I was trying my hardest to give Hagler rounds but I couldn't. Hagler couldn't land his shots. SLR was landing at will, controlled the ring, and made Hagler look clumsy a lot of times. Don't see how people thought this was a robbery. I think scoring the fight for Hagler was an attempted robbery because this was a clear win for Sugar.
its almost like people hated on SRL and wanted Hagler to win so they just said Hagler won lol.
I just dont get how people dont count all those unanswered flurries that SRL threw especially to close the rounds. Hagler just absorbed them without any answer at all. Those are all scoring points
Exactly. I watched for the first time close to a decade ago, wanting to see what this 'robbery' was all about.
SRL floated around the first 6 and took most of them. And for all the talk of his 'shoe-shining', I was saying to myself 'where was all that?' Those were not little pitty pat punches he was throwing. He was lighting Hagler up in the 2nd half of the fight. Hagler got going some too but SRL definitely held his own.
Just no way to get to 6 rounds for Hagler in that fight, and I prefer his style more than SRL's. But the rounds just aren't there for him.
thing is I love Marvin too I think he's nick name Marvelous is the GOAT!
wish Marvin would KO B-Hop if one of them took a time machine.
I just didnt see all the drama of it being all that close at all. I scored it like 8 to 4 or something for SRL. I think most people didnt score all those flurries to the Marvin's body landing cleanly too.
It really wasn't close. No way to find 6 rounds for Marvin

Like Marv said, SRL pitty patty the crown off his head
EVERY FAN IS A STAN
I thought SRL won pretty clearly too. everyone who says it was close or a controversy was just a huge Hagler Stan.
SRL was far busier and even more flashier and won over the crowd and judges. Body shots in those flurries all equal scoring points.
SRL is above having Stans :lol1:
That Stan shlt can be said of ANY fan base that has an different pov.
SRL doesn't think so
I can watch a fight with my own eyes and saw SRL won. Can you say anything about the fight other than what others told you?
A guy can win and not be dominant
Let people know they must share your opinion
Did I say they must share my opinion? No. I asked if anybody else did. Negged ***.
''Anyone else thought Sugar Ray Leonard dominated vs Hagler?''
You are emotionally unstable.

I've not researched it in a few years but thought ray won fair and square. Used a very smart game plan and stole rounds with flurries. Ultimately Hagler left it too late in the fight. The fight being over 12 rather than 15 was a big result for Leonard
Re watched not researched,

I do think he won the fight. He needed to execute a very clever gameplan to win against Hagler and that's what he did. Everything went pretty much according to the script he'd planned. But he definitely didn't dominate. I don't think it was possible for him to truly dominate in that fight.
Exactly, it was a tactical win Ray had to pitty patter and keep moving, do some clowning keep moving, run some flurries get out and keep moving, there is no way Ray could stand with Marvin without being broken down and stopped, he used boxing to beat the bigger aggressive man, boxing is a speed sport.

You were basically in my exact position years back lol. Heard about the 'robbery', decided to watch for myself. And couldn't believe how one-sided it was early for SRL.
And then the last 6, I mean he was right there trading with Hagler the whole way. There was no shoe shining either, he landed some great shots. The one judge who scored it wide for Ray had a much better card than most people.
Yes it wasn't even close. He was up like 5-1 and then the last 6 were competitive. Hagler's style is the style I usually favor. But there is no way to get him to 6 rounds there, let alone 7. SRL just ran around him and outlanded him the first 6 rounds. Then Hagler found him some but SRL found him some too in the last 6.
I was saddened to see people's comments on that fight when I posted about it a couple years ago. I couldn't believe how many people on here actually said Hagler won or it was even close.
