The question I’m asking might sound stupid but as we know some guys can brawl and get as dirty as possible to secure a win while some guys can box but whenever it gets doggish they seem to shut down and tend to either get stopped or lose confidence as the fight goes along. Forgive me if the question doesn’t make sense. Terrance Crawford is a clear example of someone who can do both and I think it throws a lot of guys off how hard he hits and his willingness to step into fire to try and finish an opponent even when it can get him in trouble.
I think Kovalev might count, actually. Sure he picked up a lot of knockouts but in those fights he pretty much always kept it at arm's length. Andre Ward showed that once you get up in his face the big bad scary Russian monster persona pretty much drops instantly and he folds pretty quickly. I think his lack of grit in close quarters is the biggest thing behind his downfall. I don't think he's ever won a fight where the opponent really went at him, with the possible exception of Yarde, but even then Yarde was winning those close-up exchanges big and only really lost because he gassed and let Kovalev reestablish his distance. Get Kovalev at a distance where he can't really use his jab and straight right and you've pretty much got his number IMO.
Pascal definitely went after him, both times.
But yeah I don't think Kov handled Ward's tactics well at all. Certainly not in fight 2 where you had to know what he was going to try to do. I thought Kov still boxed well up until the last round, but he should have handled the rough/'dirty' stuff much better really.
The man smells blood and doesn’t let up until he gets what he wants and will throw bombs while stepping into the fire to get what he wants. It’ll end up getting him hurt badly one day but he won’t hesitate to throw away all the technique just to land bombs on guys he feels are food for him.
I think TC is pretty smart in there defensively too. I don't see him taking too many big shots in his career.
I would say Kenny Rainford. As much as I despise him with all the fiber of my very being, I begrudgingly admit that Kenny is an elite boxer. But when it's time to dig down deep and just fight, Kenny folds like a tent bought from Walmart.
On the other hand, Brian Sutherland is a fighter in the purest sense of the word. Legend has it Brian was undefeated in his street fighting career and left behind scores of bodies in his violent wake.
Floyd would get destroyed by some of the guys he outboxed in a real street fight.
Guys like maidana, Castillo(who did beat him), manny would all likely kill Floyd in a street fight.
Guys like canelo and Ggg would literally murder someone in a street fight.
No one is talking about an actual street fight dummy. Keep up.

Anthony Joshua and Vasyl Lomachenko.
AJ “fought” Ruiz and was KO’ed. He was then forced to box in the rematch because a “fight” would get him KO’ed again. It seems like he is better off trying to box Wlad style than attempting to trade punches in a fire fight.
Lomachenko is a great boxer, but can’t fight. He refused to get dirty and fight back Salido when Salido made the fight a brawl. It cost Lomachenko a close decision loss which he should have won by landslide. Vs Lopez, he was straight up scared to fight. Just fought scared to death for most of the fight. He was more concerned on avoid a highlight reel KO loss than he was with trying to take the fight to Lopez. Both of Lomachenko’s losses came because he refused to bite down and let his hands go.
To be fair to AJ, he was trading hooks in close with a guy with shorter and more compact shots. It was never going to end well. I wouldn’t say it was an indication of him not being able to fight, it was just a lack IQ at that moment.

Aj also fought Wlad and Whyte and a host of other guys and won. Maybe it’s just to Ruiz’ advantage. Not that Joshua can’t fight. He’s actually fairly decent at trading and fighting in the pocket (or was).
Wilder is someone that can’t fight, even if he has the heart for it. If you box and give him room he can at least line up a big shot, otherwise he’ll just be flailing.

I agree on Crawford. It is why I have started to like him so much. Hard to find guys who can do both

Wlad can't fight worth a ****. Goes down easy and doesn't have any mean, nasty, or dirty side to him.
Man Wlad always seemed to fold whenever things got to dirty. Luckily he was really good at turning a fight back into a boxing match.
