So just had email through and dazn will be free to begin with (including canelo vs smith & jacobs this weekend) for anyone who signed up for their beta (which allowed free fights previously). Then it will go to £1.99 a month after that - or immediately for anyone who didn’t signup to beta.
Looks like it is pretty much the US cards + some non fighting content (chat shows etc) and all the archived fights.
Seems a pretty reasonable deal for such a little price, guessing it’s only going to be for six months or so but matchroom US have a few fights coming up by the look of it.
So watched the jacobs fight just now (didn’t watch it live, but not long after) - enjoyed the dazn app and how it worked. The commentary team I wasn’t so keen on! Not sure who they all were, the Americans I’m sure know - only one I knew for sure was Chris mannix - but boy did they like to shut on the fight!! Rather than complain the whole fight I would hope / want them to talk about something different, do a bit research on the fighters etc. Not sure what others felt, I guess the us audience are more used to that commentary style?
Dazn taking over doe charging $1.99 a month for their crap app
-rolling out in 200 countries
assume a modest 20k subs from each country...
that's 4m subs.
even if it was $1.99 a month, that's $96m in additional revenue per yr.
$1.99 is only for now...
4m subs from 200 countries is modest.
-pushing boxing, which is largely untapped in the global market. has HUGE potential. i mean im assuming all of us on here love boxing more than other sports. i used to be a football/soccer fan only, but boxing gradually took over. If that was the case for me, why is it any different for the millions all over the world who are obsessed with football but are only now beginning to get into boxing?
growth is also compounded eg the ones who get it and like it, talk about it and it continues to grow.
-they already monetising data, they'll be adding ads to their app too.
example, companies pay $1 for every 50 views on a youtube add. prepandemic they had 8m global subs. assume 1 ad per person per day $160k each day in ad revenue (i mean it's probably going to be more than that). That alone is $58m.
12m subs in future, $87m
4m subs paying $2 a month, $96m
8m subs (prepandemic) paying $10 a month, $960m
$1.1billion in revenue.
tell me that isnt a takeover?
they have to become more flexible. the day pass is a tenner. not worth it unless it's a really good card.
Well there is a difference between flexible and price. I would say offering it is flexible and they do need to make the monthly subscription worth it otherwise ppl would just subscribe the individual days they want.
Agree that £10 for one boxing card isn’t cheap but it really depends what your priorities with money are etc. Boxing isn’t their main sport - so it’s no different to if you wanted to watch darts for example.
Isn't that like less than $3? That's reasonable. Why the huge disparity compared to the US?
Because we're watching the fights in the middle of the night
If you download the app you can register now for £1.99 and it will work instantly

Can't believe I missed the beta release, man. Didn't even hear about it or I woulda been in.
Ah well - £1.99 I'll do even being COVID skint. Be the first subs I paid since I quit Boxnation a few years back.

Sky don’t ask for a subscription for boxing though. There primary sport is football and then others like cricket, boxing etc are effectively fillers. The only exception to the rule is F1 which is effectively a pay per view additional channel. So for you - if boxing is all you want - the subscription is a lot ; but for many it’s just part of an overall package.
By the way - you do have an option to pay less for non-Ppv cards if you don’t want all the stuff ; you can buy a day pass with sky sports ; I don’t know the price but it will be something like a fiver.

Thats the by the month price or the deal price if you get it for a year?
These mofos charging $20 in the US by the month.

How much does DAZN cost?
From 1 December 2020, the initial monthly price is set at £1.99 or less for fans signing up to the new DAZN global streaming service. Cancel anytime.
That's all it says but that 'cancel anytime' would suggest they just charging by the month. Don't expect it'll be too long before they start upping it though. Give em 6 months to a year and it'll be £5 or a tenner I'd guess. They're just trying to make a splash with big numbers of subs for now... gotta say they got me though at that price.
Well the situation is that Sky sports can't justify their subscription cost if it's just the 10 non-ppv matchroom cards in a year.
it isn't worth paying £240 for.
don't forget Boxnation was £5-10 a month and they were regularly airing US boxing too.
Boxing fans should have an option to either pay £5 for a one off fee each time to watch a non-ppv card.
bt sports should do the same.

I’m assuming uk events on sky and us events on dazn with specific exceptions eg AJ signed to sky. Although worth noting I think AJ has only one more fight in his matchroom contract at the moment ?
You misunderstanding a huge factor though. Matchroom is not just about boxing and sky and matchroom have worked together for years across a number of sports. With boxing (currently) being the biggest sport they are offering sky they really are shooting themselves in the foot if they were to walk away from them.
It’s a bit of a silly situation because Eddie Hearn is so far #1 that sky and dazn are likely to end up compromising and him promoting both somehow split when the obvious move would be for frank Warren to try and get into one. Unfortunately for frank he was short sighted when dazn first came out and his slagging off of them has most likely putt off any sort of arrangement for him; he’s never shut the door on the sky though that I’m aware of.

that's just it, with dazn being so cheap...ill be watching more US content than UK content. Most brits dont have time to watch the US cards at 3-5am though, but with dazn being that much cheaper than sky, people will also just not bother with UK boxing unless it's a big fight. Basically sky sports with just matchroom UK cards is not worth subbing to. Will sky do a deal with pbc? basically matchroom UK + mtk global + pbc cards..if they can do all that for £10 a month, then it will work, but it will be counter productive for eddie. If sky make that move, by adding eddie's competition it also pushes him towards dazn in the uk.
basically the only solution now is for eddie to go all out with dazn. Dazn will prob be £10-15 a month with matchroom UK and US.
sky will prob go all out with MTK global and also bring along smaller promoters like mick hennesey and barry mguigan.
those circumstances will benefit british boxing in a big way esp with mtk global. they're serious players

Interesting. I’m fed up with pretty much any half decent fight in the UK being PPV nowadays.
Affordable subscription with the option to watch the fights the following day spoiler free works with me.

Yes, you can basically watch any fight as if it’s live. Given most the content is from America you generally don’t see results in the press either. The layout is pretty good / easy to use and you can watch lots of archive fights too.
I’m expecting the price will go up but they obviously can’t really justify it if they don’t have uk time live events yet. Launching in 200 countries though means lots of people low prices potentially means huge income?
Nice ! Yeah I can’t wait I’m a bit disappointed that I won’t be able to catch the Jacobs fight
