This goofy AF IMO.. somebody help me and anybody else that's lost
Lomachenko petitioned to fight Campbell for the vacant WBC lightweight belt, the WBC agreed and they allowed a unified champion to fight for a vacant title against Luke Campbell. Campbell and Haney were #1 and #2 in their rankings when this happened. The WBC also ordered a tournament between Haney, Lopez, Fortuna and Abdullaev with the winner between them to become interim champion and mandatory. Haney vs Abdullaev was the only one of those fights to take place so Haney became interim champion. Top Rank petitioned for Lomachenko to become franchise champion and when the WBC elevated him to that status they also elevated Haney to Lightweight champion.
Lopez doesn't get the Franchise championship does he?
Their rules said that if the Franchise champ loses then the winner gets a Diamond belt and mandatory status.
Basically, and I said this at the time, the WBC completely devalued their championship belt. No-one had to beat Loma to become undisputed, despite the fact that we knew he was the real WBC Champ.
Haney is the WBC Champ. He didn't win it, he was awarded it.
In my view, in divisions where the WBC has designated a franchise champion, you can be undisputed without winning the WBC belt. It's a worthless belt.
Morris Sillyman is an utter tool, he's the reason. Teo isn't undisputed, he should be as he beat the man who had WON the real WBC belt. But Haney was gifted that belt.
And I say that as a real Haney fan. I do believe Haney could of won that belt the real way but stupid belts and politics and greed has made a mess of things.
It's confusing, but basically the WBC has lost its d@mn mind. In what I believe to be the WBCs response to Canelo being pissed at them after the WBC made GGG It's mandatory and tried to force that fight, the WBC came up with the Franchise belt. Apparently it's a belt given to superstars or cash cows in order to not piss them off with mandatrories while still benefiting from sanctioning fees.
When a WBC franchise champion is named, the WBC mandatory gets a chance to fight for the "vacant" WBC title to become the (regular?) WBC champion. That is what happened with Jermall Charlo at middleweight and Devin Haney at lightweight, with Canelo and Lomachenko (now Teofimo Lopez) being the WBC franchise champions.
The WBC has gone full WBA.
WBC Franchise = WBA (Super)
WBC = WBA (Regular)
WBC Interim = WBA Interim
WBC Silver = WBA Gold
Basically, Haney's belt is fake just like Davis's. One champ per governing body per division. When they have more than one, only the top champion counts. Teofimo Lopez is the only lightweight champion.
Lomachenko had the 'Franchise' belt which can be won or can't be won depending on how Sulaiman feels and apparently it means nothing. Yeah I don't understand it either I guess
