I remember hearing on HBO Edison Miranda would have to eat roadkill in colombia
Yeah I heard that story when he was coming up the ranks.
Edwin Valero was poor in Venezuela and was a part of a huge street gang growing up. He was doing coke when he was a young kid.
He was a good boxer but he had too many demons
Thanks for the heads up, man, 'dirt poor' rural was what I saw, but I'm sure these things can get exaggerated.
You can see some poverty here for sure: https://maravillabox.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/2.jpg
But I've seen a picture of him as a teenager, and he doesn't seem that poor anymore. You can check that one on his instagram.
But yeah Argentina had and has some poverty... our working class will sometime have an average salary of 1000 usd per month, and other times only 300. Our money fluctuates a lot and we have many economic crisis.
Maravilla was not raised in poverty. Just a working class family that didn't have money but not as poor as he made it seem. I've seen pictures.

Maravilla apparently, most of the Nicaraguan dudes as well I'd expect, Mayorga, maybe Choco too but IDK about him.

Thanks for the info, man, I hadn't heard that one, but it's a fairly safe bet that most Nicaraguan boxers have similar stories. I did a little digging into boxers per capita awhile back and Nicaragua came out with strikingly high numbers so I read up a coupla articles and it seems like boxing's often seen as a route out of poverty. Missed the Chocolatito story though.
EDIT: Gotta spread the karma a little first it seems.
Yeah Nicaragua is a very poor country, there’s some sort of crazy stat that 1/3 of their population live on less than 2 dollars a day or something along the lines of that. Crazy man...
AB came from cornflakes and water baby! (probobly cos his dad ate everything in the house but still!)
God this is funny. LOL. I use to laugh when broners fat A$$ dad would wobble into the ring and barely fit through the ropes
Chocolatito was very poor. He learnt how to box by wearing his dads rubber work gloves and by filling a milk sack with sand and hanging it from a guava tree as a heavy bag.
His dad was a former boxer but never made ends meet so had to go door to door selling cleaning products in Managua.

Ouma... child soldier of course, in fact you can probably add many African fighters to the list.
For sure Ouma. I get bummed when I see him still fighting.
