Boxing’s top attraction will miss both holidays and there’s growing doubt he’ll fight in 2020 at all.
That’s because Alvarez and Golden Boy Promotions are engaged in a heated dispute with DAZN officials regarding the streaming service’s refusal to pay Canelo the $35 million guaranteed in his contract.
When it signed a five-year deal with DAZN in October 2018, Golden Boy promised to deliver at least two Canelo events annually with one against a premier opponent (deemed as such at DAZN’s sole discretion). Just who (besides Gennadiy Golovkin) qualifies as “premier” in today’s boxing landscape that features few stars is at the heart of the growing conflict between Canelo, Golden Boy and DAZN. Canelo doesn’t have his own contract with DAZN, sources tell The Athletic, but is part of Golden Boy’s pact with the platform.
And just who outside of GGG could partner with Canelo for such an event? There’s a carve-out in the contract for a potential rematch with Floyd Mayweather, but that was simply due diligence on a pipe dream; Mayweather remains retired.
No one in the industry would be surprised if this matter headed to court. But to this juncture, Golden Boy hasn’t threatened legal action and DAZN has taken notice, confident in its position. In the past, GBP has sued PBC founder Al Haymon and Top Rank over different matters.

What a clutchphuck. Not having boxing's number one attraction fight in 2020 is terrible. If Jacobs/Kovalev are not considered good or premiere opponents, then who aside from GGG is considered that? If Canelo fought BJS or Smith, those two surely won't be considered premiere opponents. Andrade? Nope. Charlo? Nope. Plant? Nope. I want to see the list of opponents considered "premiere" for DAZN. Wanting Canelo to take a 50% pay cut is ridiculous. So because of the Canelo hold up, is that why no other cards have been announced yet for DAZN?
And interesting that Canelo doesn't have his own deal with DAZN. It makes sense that GBP leveraged Canelo to get their deal for the rest of the stable, but Canelo not having his own deal is interesting to say the least. Not sure why his management team would even sign off on something like that? DAZN is also clueless if they thought the Mayweather rematch could happen....And that it would happen on DAZN. ZERO percent chance even if Mayweather rematched Canelo that he wouldn't have it on SHO PPV.
Let's see how this ends up playing out.
Sounds like this is more about DAZN tightening the purse strings.
They thought giving Canelo that huge deal would cause a massive influx of subs and that hasn’t happened. Even a third GGG fight wouldn’t be a huge event. The second fight did lower PPV buys than the first one.
They already screwed Canelo last year by not letting him go after all the belts at 160 to try and force the GGG fight.
Canelo has the leverage right now as taking a year off won’t hurt him but DAZN not having its biggest draw and the negative PR will hurt them.
Also if Canelo’s team allowed GBP to sign a deal without them seeing it that horrible and grounds for Canelo to find new representation.
Except Coppinger said Canelo does NOT have a separate deal with DAZN and that it is tied with the GBP deal.
"Canelo doesn’t have his own contract with DAZN, sources tell The Athletic, but is part of Golden Boy’s pact with the platform." From todays Coppinger story.
The problem though is the Ali Act gives Canelos management the right to look at the books and he recently hired one of the top labor lawyers in CA. This really does not make sense but then DAZN and GBP are beyond amateur hour.
Coppinger did a better job explaining it on the boxing voice. DAZN pays Golden Boy $40 million per Canelo fight. That's the contract between Golden Boy and DAZN. Golden Boy pays Canelo $35 mil per fight and the other $5 mil goes towards securing Canelo's opponent. That's the contract between Canelo and Golden Boy. Then there's a separate contract between Golden Boy and DAZN for non Canelo fights. Canelo wants to see the contract between DAZN & Golden Boy for his fights. You're correct he doesn't have a contract directly with DAZN.

They're his promoter so they are a part if his deal. But they have their own deal also. What he's asking to see is the second one I quoted from the article. That's my understanding from reading it

Can you post the full article?
Who is genuinely surprised at this?
While Canelo doesn't want a paycut, these guys aren't fighting Canelo for peanuts equally. But it also goes to show fighting Canelo isn't really the same thing as people rushing to fight Manny or Floyd at their peaks which brought in massive PPVs (not even counting gate).
If I'm fighting someone with Canelo's clout I'd actually like people to watch let alone know where to tune in.
Not me, I would have been surprised if things didn’t end up this way frankly. People love to put the cart before the horse.
I know Oscar is involved in this current situation with Canelo/DAZN, but boy it makes me long for the time when he was fighting everyone and the fights didn’t seem that hard to make.
Btw If Oscar does come back id be cool to see him fight Sergio Martinez. I’m sure that makes too much sense from a true fan perspective and not enough dollars for the fringe fans to get on board.
good, he was probably gonna fight an overmatched opponent anyways
I mean the two reported front runners were Smith and BJS. Are those guys considered overmatched?
You say GGG is the only premier opponent Canelo could face?

 :lol1:
Chava from Espn is reporting that Canelo wouldn’t accept a 50% pay cut but he willing to accept approximately 30% pay cut either vs Smith or Bjs. Sidenote: this tells me he really doesn’t wanna sit out the year n it might mean he goes to the UK since they expect fans soon. 🤔 pic.twitter.com/HvHQeZwPuH— Big Irv (@TheKidIrv24) September 2, 2020
Nelo would take 30%. DAZN should just take that and stop making their company look like a sinking ship. **** is embarrassing.
Here he talks about Canelo's deal
After Canelo signed a 10-fight deal with DAZN that guaranteed $35 million per bout, those doling out the money envisioned high-profile events that would move the needle for potential subscribers. Instead, sources said, senior officials at DAZN are underwhelmed by the matchups Golden Boy has delivered for the Mexican star.
Here he calls Golden Boy's deal a separate deal
Golden Boy’s own five-year deal with DAZN calls for a minimum of five events annually (maximum of 10) excluding Canelo. Included in the rights deal — DAZN pays Golden Boy approximately $17.5 million per year for those non-Canelo bouts — is language that governs whom Alvarez will face.

That's Golden Boy's deal with DAZN which is separate from Canelo's deal with DAZN. He wouldn't be entitled to see that without legal action

Huh?
Yeah, that was odd and why his management team signed off on this is baffling.
Wow! How? That doesn't go against the Ali Act? That is not good!

This issue is you gave this man a 10 fight deal yet were only interested in ONE fight? Like there was absolutely nothing wrong with the Jacobs and Kovalev fights. Again, those fights won him FOTY. And those two have solid names. Even if the GGG trilogy happened, then what? What were there plans after that?
Yeah DAZN is tripping if they doesn’t consider Jacobs and Kovalev premier opponents. If they only want fights that will significantly move the needle, then there’s only GGG. They screwed themselves over.
