In my opinion he is clearly one of the 21st century greatest boxers. What do you guys think of Miguel Cottos legacy? Is he Hall Of Fame level? Is he ATG? 4 division champ. 6 time world champion.
I don't think you understand what i wrote. Let me simplify it for you. Had cotto fought in a era where pac and floyd werent fighting he would have stood out more
He'd have been an Oba Carr level talent in the 90s. I don't see him beating Curry or Starling in the mid to late 80s. Any era prior he'd be fighting at a higher weight due to the same day weigh in rule, and I'm quite positive he isn't even reaching title contention at Middleweight in the 70s or 80s. I'd favor him over Kalule at 154, though.
Your simplification did little for your case.
Bro you should feel special, you my friend are the only dude ive ever had to put on ignore in the 3 yrs since ive been here.
you should feel special, for finally listening ;)
Been reading a few of your posts and i cant even believe its you.
Im glad i took you of my ignore list today, considering your bringing something to the table not just ragging on GGG.
Good for you bro.
yea I got side-tracked
we have recently had this conversation regarding two other fighters
Broner, and Golovkin
like Broner and Golovkin... Cotto is a HOF'er, but not a ATG
interestingly, some posters do not seem to know the difference... I am currently embroiled in this debate on the other thread
Cotto is obviously better than Broner and Golovkin, but not a ATG
the difference is... with the HOF, you are compared to a standard... a standard that is high, but not towering, and it seems to change over time... including paper achievements
with a ATG... you are compared to your peers based on wins, nothing else
there will eventually be HUNDREDS of hof'ers, but only dozens of genuine greats... and the list of genuine greats will become more refined over time, not widened over time like with the HOF

He's a Hall of Famer, but yet another guy who would be a lot more respected had he just chilled at 140, unified and dominated his division as opposed to flying through weight classes, picking up ABC belts
The Pac/Floyd era wasn't even a particularly strong one by historical 140-147 standards. So what era would he have been one of the definitive best?

Just think of it like this; he would probably up there in the mentions of the definitive best of his era if he didnt have the misfortune of competing in the pac floyd era

No. It might seem like he's underrated since people aren't talking about him now as he's retired and he fought in an era that included Mayweather and Pacquiao, two certifiable ATGs.
Cotto was a great fighter for his era, but not an all time great.
He was actually a little overrated when he was active cause he was a very popular, exciting fighter and HBO hyped him up heavily.
If anything I think he's overrated. His best days were at 140.
Great fighter, but being the Puerto Rican boxing torchbearer kinda elevated his fame IMO. Maybe I'm looking at it through the wrong lense because Floyd & Pac were in his era.
I think he is over rated.
I think he definitely deserves to be HOF.
I think he had really good ring IQ.
I think later in his career he had really good business mind.
I enjoyed most of his fights as he was good enough, smart enough but at the same time vulnerable enough to make interesting.
I felt sorry for him getting destroyed by Margarito, that really took a lot out of him mentally and he went from a fully grown mature adult with kids with a clean body to a fully tattood body (including neck) within months of that loss.
All in all I'll enjoy watching his replays and wish him best in the sport. Also deserves kudos for learning English very well later on in his career.
Cotto is a good fighter. Not an A+ fighter but he was good. Who knows how high he would of gotten if he wasnt smashed with a cast for 10 plus rounds. He clearly wasnt the same after the margarito fight. He became gun shy and swelled more easily. Even tho he did lose a lot of his big fights the man fought everybody. Just like Floyd and Mosley. I would of loved to see him against hatton and kosta Tzyu.
He was a very good fighter. But he did blow hot and cold a bit. You wasn't really sure what version of cott o would turn up from one day to the next.
Pac did beat clottey so much more dominant as Pac often did. So I think you can see the gulf a bit there it is revealing.
Clottey didnt try to win and still busted Manny up, the interviews with Clottey tell the story of why he didnt try to win the fight, lucky for Manny because a 1/2 charged Clottey was whipping Manny every time he let his hands go.
Cotto will definitely make the HOF, his biggest downfalls was a cheat beating that could have killed him and then given 2 give me fights and then Manny at a CW where the biggest mistakes in his career, although the CW was forced on him by Arum, Cotto didnt even want his title on the line at a CW.
Cotto was an honorable man and hell of fighter.
.
