I mean, he was fast, skilled, explosive. But still. His best win is old Holmes. Got stopped by Douglas when he was still in his prime. Lost to Holyfield twice. Lost to Lennox when he was 36. Lost to 2 journeymen when he was 38-39. And still some id.iots come crazy claiming he can be a contender by 53?
If you need some icones from old times, you should chose Ali, Joe Louis, Holyfield, Holmes. Or even Vladimir Klitschko who came back from 3 stoppage losses to win world title for next almost 10 years..
too much too young, might have lasted longer if Cus had delayed his rise.
his first title win still trumps anything that joshua fury or the other one have done.
Cus was dead before be became Champ you know that right?
From 1986-1989 he had some solid wins:
Alfonso Ratliff (former WBC and lineal cruiserweight champ)
Trevor Berbick (reigning WBC heavyweight champ)
James Smith (reigning WBA heavyweight champ)
Pinklon Thomas (former WBC and future IBO heavyweight champ)
Tony Tucker (reigning IBF heavyweight champ)
Tyrell Biggs (Olympic Gold Medalist)
Larry Holmes (former WBC, IBF, Ring, lineal heavyweight champ)
Tony Tubbs (former WBA heavyweight champ)
Michael Spinks (former WBA/WBC/IBF/Ring/lineal light heavyweight champ, former IBF and reigning Ring and lineal heavyweight champ)
Frank Bruno (future WBC heavyweight champ)
He was a hell of a fighter in his prime when he was about 21 to 26 years old. He peaked early and burned out fairly early. He is way too old to beat any top 20 heavyweight today.
Here are some things to help you understand the myth
Youngest HW champion of all time at age 20
Unified champion at age 21
Undisputed world champion
TWO time world champion
FIVE time a belt winner
9 world title defences
People criticise his opposition but how is that Tyson's fault? You can only fight your ranked contenders.
Head to head he would have been a monster in any era in his prime,
Can you imagine him against Joshua, Wilder, Whyte, Povetkin, Fury if he was around today?
At his best he was ferocious, watch him beat bruno. When he was hot, he blew hot koing everyone.
People judge him how he was when blowing hot.Top 10 isn't out of question
Very repetitive threads on here.
I am busy at the moment, but I want to let people know? That I will be coming back to this.
The thread starter is obviously new to boxing, and LOOKS like he believes Tyson Fury is some sort of prophet.
There was nothing mythical about Mike Tyson.
I mean, he was fast, skilled, explosive. But still. His best win is old Holmes. Got stopped by Douglas when he was still in his prime. Lost to Holyfield twice. Lost to Lennox when he was 36. Mate, I am just going to be real straight with you.
Shut the ***** up.
That is the problem when trying to rate or rank any fighter. We who didn't live through their time probably will never get the magnitude of how great they were.
It's like trying to explain someone who watched Pac live when he was fighting at 122lbs to those that just caught him prior to facing Mayweather. It's like two different careers of Pac. His WW career and his 130lbs and under career. It's something you would probably never get unless you saw it live and knew everything going on around their life at that time. Watching the prefight interviews. Watching them in camp. Everything leading up to their fights.
And I forgot to mention: As much of a Tyson fan as I am I do not think he can contend at age 53. If he truly wants to do exhibition only that's cool but there is NO way in hell a 53 year old man should be in a real fight, I dont care how good he used to be. That is a sure fire recipe for tragedy
It is difficult to explain Tyson. He was simply ferocious in the ring, all the way up until he lost to Buster Douglas. It was the way he ran through the HW division so thoroughly and quickly at such a young age that set him apart. Even ATG HOFs like Ali and Louis weren't crushing multiple opponents in a matter of a couple of minutes or less like Tyson did. Tyson obviously had some mental issues going on and he battled personal demons. I truly believe that had he NOT had these issues going on he could have easily became one of the best P4P boxers ever. I don't hold Tyson's career in the same light as I do Ali and Louis but he is one of my personal favorite boxers of all time. I'm glad he seems to have made a comeback from all his issues over the years
Also, I think it would be helpful if you watched the entire HBO shows for Tyson fights instead of just the fights. They have introductions and background to what Tyson was going through at the time (managerial problems, divorce, training). You'll see his rise, then the personal problems, decline and end. FameKillusion had the whole Tyson career set on YouTube, but they were removed.

Agree totally. Also if you read Tyson’s rather depressing book, after he split from Kevin Rooney etc he never lived the life. If he had had Holyfield determination and focus he would be GOAT no questions asked.
I think you have to have lived through the 80s to really appreciate Tyson as a fighter. I've never liked the way some people take a clinical look at a fighter's stats without content or regard to their personal circumstances at the time or other human factors. I've noticed millennials do this quite a lot.
Disregard anything Atlas says when it comes to Tyson, he's always been bitter. Tyson was a phenomenal fighter.
