I found this neat software that employes neural networks to upscale lower res video to a higher resolutions. It's pretty badass after some testing. There's lots of potential here to remaster older fights.
Here's a 10 second clip of Martinez vs Williams I upscaled to 4k 60fps using the software. (the source is 720p 60fps)
Here's the same clip but upscaled to 4k normally for comparison.
Bonus clip for the Williams KO.
I honestly can't find any boxing video on youtube that looks better than this. I've heard DAZN has 4k (not sure if native), but I haven't really looked at it so I'm curious.
Reason I only have short clips is because it takes 1.5 minutes to just render 1 second of footage even on my $500 RTX 2070 Super video card. Would literally take 3 days to do one full 12 round fight. I would like to try sometime though.
Topaz Video Enhance AI. You kind of need a recentish Nvidia card though. Running off CPU is super slow.
Thanks pal.
I have an Alienware with a GTX1070M so I'm fine.
LMAO, I ran some super low res porn through the program. The result is actually more dramatic than the boxing videos.
Its nowhere near the quality of true 4k, its like any enlargement its softer and looks ok but not when its beside the image originally shot at hi res.
You cannot make pixels that are not there so its an estimate and will always soften and create artifacts fringing halos etc.
Blowups can look fine to the naked eye but not side by side comparisons with real hi res.
The processing time is upscaling every frame to 3840 x 2160, so the PC is rendering around 1800 images for every minute of film.
You're right it wont look good compared compared to native 4k, but I think it does look much better than the original lower res video This isn't just a simple mathematical algorithm that stretches out the picture some way. With neural networks, you actually can kind of make pixels from where there weren't any before. It like an artist that fills in realistic details based on his personal knowledge of the world. It might not be the exact original details, but it could be close enough that it doesn't' matter. If you have a low res pic of a brick wall, a neural network might be able to reconstruct it to a higher res if it was was trained with a ton of pictures of brick walls.
But yeah, quality will vary depending on the type of videos it was trained with. I doubt this was trained with boxing fights. It's still kind of new tech. In the future, this type of tech will get pretty interesting. Sort of like deep fakes.

What is the software called?
I have a 4K TV. I think it will be a while before we get 4K boxing.
I have a couple of 4K fights from Sky Sports.
Sky have been broadcasting in 4K for about 2 years now.

I think the point the good Doktor is making here is that if you throw enough processing power at it you can convert lower res footage into a very close approximation of what the fights would have looked like if they'd been filmed in 4k... so you won't have to wait. well except that even with a pretty high spec home PC and GPU it takes a lot of processing time. That kinda graphical application is notoriously demanding I believe.

Superb work man, though that's quite some effort to go to though. Mainly what you just did was whet my apetite for my old Maravilla back catalogue though... I may be some time.. :lol1:
