Left a bad taste in my mouth, ggg clearly won the first fight with output and consistent pressure. Canelos fought in bursts but not enough to warrant a draw. I had it 8 - 4 ggg.
Second fight alvarezs output increased but ggg still outlanding and more consistent i had it 7 - 5 ggg.
In before canelo nut huggers storm in, i admire alvarezs skill and change of tactics in the rematch but i feel he did not produce a dominant enough performance to take the belts.
Yeah that fight was actually agreed as well, such a shame about Pirog, persistent back injury I think it was.
Yeah he was gonna fight him but took proksa instead. What a dance that would have been!
I didn't go through the whole of this thread, so if someone ended up already sharing the following, then my apologies. The following version of the rematch is one I cobbled together back at the end of January and posted to my YT channel, as well as sharing it in a thread here. It is 1080p 50fps and most importantly to me, sans all commentary, only with all the fight and crowd audio. Enjoy if you should choose to do so and haven't yet seen it.
Thank you for posting!!

Literally word for word how I saw both bouts and what I think of Canelo. To add we saw 2 classics and the rematch going into the last two rounds was a real nail biter. Kudos to Canelo for taking him and fighting 24 rds at such a high level and kudos to GGG for rising to the occasion during the championship rounds so late in his career clearly past his prime in the rematch. He did enough to keep his belts. Love it. There were no losers but one guy got screwed twice.
Ha ha.. I hadda go away and research the rules, I did recall it as fewer rounds, but maybe it's more cos this one's a world championship
Explains the rules at about 1:30... 11 rounds, 12 mins each on the Chess clock. Starts with 4 mins of chess then 3 of boxing 6 rounds chess total 6 x 4mins chess 5 x 3 mins boxing. KO or Checkmate is a win. Running out of time on the board is also an L. A draw on the board goes to points in the ring.
As I woulda thought the biggest challenge is to avoid making stupid mistakes on the board once you get tired, which is easier said than done cos your focus just goes when you're real tired. I guess the best strategy would be fairly cautious play.
This full event's kinda a bit better cos they got a proper chess display so you can follow the chess too. Not quite sure I'm quite interested enough to watch 3 hours of that ish though... :lol1:
Hahaha yeah it would majorly test your concentration, especially once the fatigue sets in. Definitely one of the strangest sports going.

There has to be, I suppose it’s a different form of mental warfare.
I actually remember seeing a feature about it on KOTV. I would struggle enough just concentrating on the chess, my amateur coach always told me I was “too much of a thinker” though so maybe I should’ve got into it. Or maybe he was just using a kind way of telling me I was sh**.
I’d actually be interested in seeing a full fight though, would checkmate be equivalent to a KO? Can you win on points?

Usyk, Bud, Pirog, the Klits... almost enough to make you speculate there could be a strong link between mental focus and agility and boxing ability. :lol1:
You ever heard of chess boxing? I always found the idea fascinating - in fact there was a dude on here actually does it I spoke with a coupla years back, can't recall the username now though. That ****s gotta be real difficult, I know from trying to play online right after training BJJ it's incredibly difficult to stay focused through exhaustion, and the discipline it must take to step straight from ring to board gotta be something else.

His performance against Jacobs looks far better in hindsight.
A lot of fighters seem to like chess. The Klitschko’s would play each other for hours.

I'm sure that happens a great deal more than we know, but I don't think Dmitry had any particular network affiliation. Besides what scant information there's been about him indicate that he's got some business interests and involvement in local politics if I heard right. Smart fella, his ring name 'the Grandmaster' is of course a chess reference, like Bud he's apparently a keen player.

A lot of fighters have long existed conditions that aren't disclosed for business reasons, and they go in fighting with approved cortisone shots. the networks are dependent of shows.

Dude put his back out hitting a tractor tyre with a sledge by account's, and every time he tried to come back in recurred. Given how much Pirogs style was about bending and upper body movement you can see how it ain't really something he could work around. Damn shame though.
Yeah it's definitely a shame bro, we also missed out on a prime ggg vs prime pirog fight would have been crazy. I think canelo can win a third fight convincingly although I wish ggg could turn back the clocks so to speak and pull out one last great performance and win. But its highly unlikely at this stage.

Yeah GGG definitely seems to have declined, it’s such a shame he never got these career defining fights in his prime. I think Canelo finally gets a clear win in the 3rd fight. I still think it’ll be competitive but I’ve got Canelo winning 8-4’ish- so probably gonna be 120-108 Canelo on at least one card...😂

I came up with the same scores that you did upon first viewing these fights. I haven't gone back to watch them since they first aired but we saw both of them the same way.
Yeah man makes sense to me the second fight was a lot closer.
GGG won first fight clearly by outworking canelo. The second fight was much closer but I liked GGG even better as he boxed more effectively and stunned canelo. GGG deserved 2 wins in these fights. Just imagine what he would have done to canelo if he fought him in his prime.
So people on here saying GGG is hypejob and canelo is GoD must be total imbeciles since canelo barely pulled off and get gift decision over old GGG
I'll lead or start something new.
I never once said Canelo beat GGG in the first fight. I have always said, more than anyone, that the DRAW was justified because it takes 3 judges. If Byrd had it any combination for Canelo winning or had it DRAW, the fight would still be a DRAW.
At the end of the day people would still debate over it. The FACT is both men were standing strong, and Canelo proved himself in the ring in the first fight. Another fact is that I enjoyed seeing Canelo switch it up with his own footwork I never seen before and his legacy defining rope'a'dope. Those sequences of defense are forever in the books, and as Canelo keeps on winning his throwback fights only get better since we trust Ring IQ being proven.
If GGG fans feel his amateur pedigree along with Olympic merit and pro ring experience was good enough for benefit of doubt with that Canelo 1 compubox then that's on them. I have higher standards.
How in the heck can you call that fiasco on the ropes by Canelo legacy defining?? Unless his legacy is stupidity. His own corner was telling him to stay off the ropes. One broadcast I watched had the announcers wondering why he was doing it. He clearly did better when his back was off the ropes. His corner knew that and that's one reason he had to change up his style for the rematch.
