Has the catchweight been confirmed by the fighters? HBO didn't know about it. They said the fight was at the 160lb limit on the broadcast and didn't know why Hopkins weighed so low.
I seen storys but there were all from last few years. I don't think it was reported and no one seemed to remember it they just assumed. Would make me feel a LITTLE better if not reported, but the info has been out there AT LEAST a couple years.
I know what you’re referencing though. I watched that fight again a few months ago and I remember one of the announcers mentioning that Hopkins came in a couple pounds lighter than he had to as a mind game or some **** like that.
Yea it was a big story at weigh in. B-hop came in at 156(maybe change). Not sure if that's what got me(at least part) or if it was reported at time. Never heard anyone bring that up like they do other catchweights and I remember the fight clearly. Either way my argument was NO CATCHWEIGHT and there clearly was one(158). One point though the other guy got it mixed up and thought I was saying B-hop asked for it, and that was not the case. Of course if there was one ODLH asked for it. Even in storys it don't say who asked for it, but once I seen story's(all from last few years) I said I was wrong because there is no way in hell the bigger guy asked for it.
Something tells me your being honest. These guys are trying to make it seem like ODLH was some huge diva which he was not. He happened to be in the ultimate position to treat his oponents like nobody’s but I think he was always fare and took many risks
Honest-yes, right-no. Looks like there was a catchweight of 158. Not sure it was reported at time because I remember that fight clearly even B-hop weight(156). I knew the big story the day before was B-hop coming in lighter then he had to, which he did(156). Maybe that's what threw me off or it was not reported at time. Either way still wrong because the storys I seen and the ones posted were from last few years, so the info was out there AT LEAST that long. Honesty though I have never heard anyone bring that catchweight up like they do for May's one or even Pac couple.
huh???????????
He got it mixed up. The question was not who asked for it, but if there was one. That's why I was a little upset because he made this thread that sounded like I was saying B-hop asked for catchweight. Of course it was ODLH. I don't remember a catchweight and I knew the big story was B-hop coming in lighter then anyone expected at 156( catch was 158). Not sure if it was even reported at time, as the storys I seen and the ones posted were from last couple years. That said it don't change I was wrong as info has been out there AT LEAST a couple years.BTW The post I sent to you I put down wrong name, but I edited it in about 2 min.
It tastes like **** right now lol

Oscar would have gotten a $h!t-ty credit had he won that fight because Bhop was drained to max but it doesn’t matter now, right? The important thing was that the bigger man, whilst drained, won so it was a legit boxing fight that didn’t defy boxing weight classes logic
Not trying to be rude, but all you have to do is google the weigh in. No disrespect, but I don't really care if you believe it or not. One guy was saying it was ODLH that made a catchweight, and I told him he did not. He decided to make a poll instead of just looking it up. As far as im conserved I KNOW it was B-hop and am willing to put up money to anyone that wants to prove me wrong, but not going to do work for him or you. If you think im wrong that's fine, if you want to prove it then go ahead, but it was a surprise to everyone (he came so light)and its pretty well known to most who were around at time.

Why in the hell would a big middleweight champion ask to fight a smaller man at a catchweight of 158 pounds which helps Oscar not Hopkins?????? Oscar was the A side and he wanted to pull a Cotto and win the world's middleweight title at a weight below the standard traditional 160 pound limit. It was absolutely 100% Oscar's idea and they kept the catchweight a secret for a while because Oscar knew it was BS and boxing fans would not like it. These big stars get away with BS like this. Sugar Ray Leonard won both the 168 pound tittle and the 175 pound title in the same fight even though the weigh limit was 168.

i never said B- hop asked for it. That being said ive sen a few after the fact that are saying it was 158. Maybe it was because he came in lighter or it was not released at time, but it looks like I WAS WRONG
huh???????????
LOL, I knew you would respond. I'm just busting your balls man. It's all in fun. It's just boxing talk.
I mean you are in 'my' thread, and I usually respond to most posts in a thread I make...and then you mentioned me specifically in your comment too lol.
But I hear ya man...I'm on this forum because I like boxing and I like to talk boxing...I just try to call it like I see it with things and go from there...I learned a few years ago to not take anything seriously online, just not worth it.
I'm sure I let some of my biases get through and am wrong from time to time...but I can honestly say I just try to evaluate everything objectively and call it like I see it.
Man I must have really hurt your feelings with a post I had...you're following me around like a lost puppy now

I have seen wiki and one other that are claiming it was 158.(not 157) Im prtty sure it was not released at time or the fact B-hop came in 2pds lighter then catchweight had me off. Either way im man enough to admit it looks like I WAS WRONG

Dayum, you let Boxing_1013 school you? He don't know SHAT about boxing. LOL but props to you for being able to admit you were wrong. It's just boxing talk after all. Now if only others would do the same, we'd have some decent discussions around here.

Most of us are probably wrong on here like 1/10 times we get into discussions...and not like opinion wrong...I mean like just not accurate...but you're a better man than most...almost always on here you will see someone deflect and move the goalposts when they are 'wrong'...you owned up to it, that's what a man does...no need to feel too bad about it.

it's all good man...happens to all of us..props to you for not deflecting or moving the goalposts
You think they both just showed up and decided to weight 156 and 155 respectively? After Oscar just fought Sturm at 160...and BHop had to my knowledge fought at the MW limit for the last 15 years prior to that fight
I have seen wiki and one other that are claiming it was 158.(not 157) Im prtty sure it was not released at time or the fact B-hop came in 2pds lighter then catchweight had me off. Either way im man enough to admit it looks like I WAS WRONG
why would the heavier person ever demand a catchweight man??? Oscar asked for it and Hopkins agreed

I can't find much thru google search , what I found points to ODLH which makes sense Bhop had no leverage to negotiate a catchweight. All these articles are from 2004
NY Times : From the Article The two men came into the fight looking trim and cut. De La Hoya weighed in at a trim 155, Hopkins a pound heavier, his lightest in 10 years. He said that he improved his speed, but kept his power.
Although De La Hoya was the challenger for Hopkins's three titles, De La Hoya held the leverage in negotiations for the bout.

From Article : Handlers of De la Hoya, a relative newcomer to the middleweight ranks after claiming titles at 135, 140, 147 and 154 pounds, had pressured Hopkins to lower the top limit from the normal 160 pounds to 158, something Hopkins said made no difference to him.
"My whole career, I have been under 160," said Hopkins, 39. "It makes no difference. I know I will have to do a lot of chasing, so having less weight will help.
"The weight is not an issue," added Hopkins, who brings a record of 44-2 with one no-contest and 31 knock-outs. "I am faster than him, and I will catch him."

Baltimore Sun from the article :This time, De La Hoya (37-3, 29 knockouts) fights at the MGM Grand, where Hopkins (44-2-1, 31 KOs) puts his International Boxing Federation, World Boxing Council and World Boxing Association titles on the line in what is expected to be the highest-grossing non-heavyweight fight. The two must meet a contract weight limit of 158 pounds (the actual middleweight limit is 160).
