I really enjoyed the recent thread started by TheMyspaceDayz (about chins) and all of the well-thought out answers.
I started thinking about what makes a great chin that can withstand ferocious punishment. I was thinking how a lot of these guys had really ugly mugs and square shaped heads that looked like leathery wooden blocks on top of wide, sturdy necks.
I work at a facility for the criminally insane, and I know a guard who looks this way (giant square head, etc ... similar to McCall) and he took several brutal haymakers to the head of his head from a violent patient and didn’t go to the floor. Wrapped him up so he couldn’t throw anymore. Didn’t even have a mild concussion.
On the flip side. Amir Khan and other glass jaws often have that long, narrow “prettyboy” face. Less neck mass. Not as leathery and ugly. Look more like they could model for a JC Penney suit catalog.
Which gets me to believe that you can tell a lot about a fighter’s chin from the way his head, neck, and face looks.
Agree or disagree?
Look at the Canelo vs Khan poster. That is the cranial difference between a glass jaw and iron jaw
Canelo and Oscar are both pretty boys too btw. But their skull is more robust
1-Determination
2-Physical fitness
3-Bone structure
4-strong legs,neck,core and back
5-Awareness
You think Amir khan isn’t determined? Overall positioning has to be included on that list. Keeping from being hit flush may be the most important.
Structure and working out on you neck helps but the biggest problem is people box with there chin up most of the time. It should ALWAYS BE TUCKED. Mental constitution is another thing.
I think it’s something you have or don’t.
Froch had a quite pointy head and narrow chin, but he had a granite chin. So i don’t think the shape of it is really a factor.
There is definitely factors like conditioning, making weight correctly etc. But i think for the most part, you either have it or don’t. You can probably do things to make improvements, but it’ll never be a drastic change. Just like you can train to improve speed and power if you’re a slower fighter or lighter puncher, but you’re never going to improve them that much if you’re not blessed naturally. So i think a chin is the same.
Hey, do you guys remember those old Hopkins training vids where he wears a skull cao attached to weights? Lifting his head up and down! That's gotta be worth something, as nacho beristeun views bhop as the greatest p4per of all time.
I was always told that a chin is something you were born with. Some guys can take a shot others can not. Sure you can do things to minimize that hard shot> roll with the punch position, body movement but until a guy gets in the ring and gets hit.? that is one thing you have to wait and see. I believe there is a lot of truth to that take on taking a punch. It is one of the big points of what makes up a fighter.
True day! Remember the shot sugar Ray Leonard hit Donny lalonde with? Oooh, he hit him in the Adams apple( throat) it was the punch that almost ended his career. He from my home town.
I once heard a good chin was in the making if you practiced walking around with your chin tucked but your eyes up, build routine. The few times I've sparred other guys with different skill sets, I try to probe my jab as close to my face and short with my side of the head protected. It's not a chin hitting c ontest! Also flashback to Lewis Tyson is on, some of those shots Lennox hit him with, Tyson's head bounced off his left or right shoulder. He conceded to say he can take a hell of a shot, one of those thick necked big headed mfs.
You should remember than Khan is a high level pro boxer who has been a world champion. His chin is only weak compared to other high level boxers. He no doubt has a great chin compared to the average man and a good chin compared to lower level boxers. If he didn't he would never have become a world champion. Pro boxers are tough and champion level pro boxers are tougher. They do everything far better than the average man including taking hard punches. If they were not a hell of a lot better nobody would pay to watch them fight. If a man had a weak chin he would find out very quickly that boxing was not his sport just in sparring. He would never make it to the pros or even the amateurs. You can't tell how good of punch a guy can take just by looking. A guy could have the same type head and neck as Khan and take a punch much better or worse. You can only go by results when they get hit hard.
Core strength also seems to help, David Haye in his last fight against Toney Bellew? Just did not seem as strong in his core, his foundation was not absorbing/distributing the shock waves etc
I don't think it is entirely just about the chin, as people have already mentioned 'There are many factors which influence a fighters ability to take/survive a punch'.

Ive always thought it came down to bone density, since we say chin but it includes durability all over the head. Muscle and bone grow together, so these guys will have thick muscular Jaws. Look at Julio Cesar Chavez, and Oliver Mccall, these guys had huge strips of muscle at the sides of their jaws, just have a look at the pics. Also, Jake Lamotta said these muscles prevent the legs going when the nerves are disrupted from a shot to the jaw. And he knew something about taking punishment.
