He became the highest paid athlete of the decade with almost no major endorsements unlike almost every other athlete on the list. His money came almost all from his ability to sell PPV buys.
How did he do it? He wasn't the flashiest fighter, not the most articulate, not the most charming. How did he become the richest boxer and possibly athlete in history?

Marketing genius who played the bad guy. That had whole nations paying to see their man Knock him out.
But would seldom get touched With his amazing boxing skills in spite of his boring safety 1st style.

First of all, he was an incredible boxer. The Boxrec computers have him pound for pound as the #1 boxer of all time. So all of the hype and marketing aside, it is appropriate that the greatest fighter that ever lived also made the most money.
Separate from that, he realized that as a black man, he was much better off being the villain and trying to make as much money as possible from the passionate Mexican fans who would want to see their heroes try to shut Mayweather up.
He also did whatever it took to get the current cash cow in the ring with him (De La Hoya). To become a huge PPV attraction, you usually have to beat the previous PPV attractions. He gave De La Hoya every concession. Went to the full 154 limit and beat him. At that point, Mayweather becomes the biggest star in boxing.
He runs through a ton of big names after that and also retires various times to built hype for his inevitable return. After De La Hoya, he beats Hatton, Marquez, Mosley, Cotto, Canelo, Pacquiao. A real who's who of top fighters.
Hate is a more consistent & dependable emotion in people. People wanna see those they hate fail more than they wanna see people they love succeed. Floyd capitalized on that hate & made himself the biggest name in the game & arguably of all time & certainly among the biggest names of all time.
This is a very underrated comment that will easily get overlooked on this thread.
Re: the bold. Uh, what?
The Mayweather that verbally destroyed Corrales was Pretty Boy. There was ZERO humility.
Check out Floyd postfight after Corrales.
Humble as they come.

Great marketing. He knows when to time his fights. He knows how to hype them up when he fights them.
He knows the dates.
Everything Perfectly engineered to make him look great and like he’s fighting them at their primes and their absolute best.
Floyd does his homework.
That De La Hoya 24/7 was a game changer for him. He sold himself as the villain and people tuned in to see if someone could shut him up. Then the Pacquiao fight being talked about helped them both as people wanted to see if those fights would lead to the matchup we all wanted.
Too bad the fight didn’t happen in 2010. In 2015 Pac was 3 years from getting brutally KO’d by Marquez and wasn’t the same fighter.
if i could fight too good like plyoy floyd i would be rich..
racisim and self marketing...
there are hoes now who claim victim hood.. racism.. and cashing in on people holding them back..
oprah.. jz.. vida loco loca....
i am fixing to ppenn open a thing called a cafe.. by the bizay.. selling mexican food.. lets see if it flys...
Floyd was a genius for that. His fights weren't must see, but you had to buy the PPV cause you knew it was a big event. Wether you wanted to see his lose or win, it was always great night for boxing. Never been a fan but I respect Floyd for his work ethic through the years. When I see the Floyd wannabes nowadays that dont make weight and dont take the game serious, I laugh. Respect.to him from a non fan lol
"Fan" is short for fanatic.
Has nothing to do with liking a person or not.
Floyd realized this at some point in his career (probably around the Gatti fight, but definitely by the time he bought out his contract).
He realized there was a whole urban hip hop culture boxing was largely ignoring and that he could attract many more fans- those who liked the image AND those who detested it- if he played the heel by adopting that culture.
Thus, "Money" was born. Pretty Boy was humble, was trying to be another Sugar Ray or Golden Boy. Money didn't give af about being thought well of, Money was Ali style trash talk on steroids, was sickeningly confident to the point of vanity, and dressed and walked around like a rapper.
Whether you paid because you liked Money or you paid because you wanted to see Money get what you thought was coming to him, you paid and you were a fan.
And him staying undefeated (and most importantly, making things look easy while doing so) only added to the ranks on each side.
They'll be studying what Floyd did in business marketing classes 50 years from now or even more.
He had a vision and pulled it off spectacularly.
So...Floyd waited for 6 years to fight Manny...which was actually Manny's fault (Freddie Roach) due to refusing the drug testing.
Mayweather fights and soundly beats a clean Pacquaio.
Now, FIVE YEARS LATER, you want Floyd to fight Manny again simply because you bought into Shouldergate.
So first it was, "he waited until Manny got old", now it's "come on Floyd, fight an EVEN OLDER Manny!"
Do you understand that people like you are the answer to the question asked in this thread? You are so hell bent on even remote chances to see the guy lose that you completely abandon logic.
Well he lost that fight to Manny
When you look at those numbers it's amazing. More so because boxing is a fringe sport. Mayweather cleverly packaged, promoted himself and cultivated a rapid fan base. He kept himself officially undefeated and boxed circles around some fighters that were expected to give him a challenge. If he wasn't a boxer he should be an advertising executive. LOL..
The answer to this question is because so many people tuned in to see the arrogant f***** lose, and on top of that he was the greatest fighter of his generation.
Floyd was able to sell so many gotdang PPV's cuz Floyd was a gotdang super star. Floyd has the gift of the gab and the resume and skills to back it all up. It doesnt matter that he wasnt the most exciting in the ring, although in his early days he was, but America had the best fighter in the world and they wanted part of it. He isnt like todays fighters that are telling people they are the best he was the best and he proved he was the best. If Floyd had been a national in any other country with the skills he had he would of been a superstar in those countries. Luckily he was a national in America which has the richest veins to be tapping into.
I always hated Floyd but life is what it is and im not salty enough to deny Floyd was just the complete package. You dont have to be the best to be a star or a super star you just have to be able to sell. Floyd could sell AND he was the best.
Walking the walk and talking the talk. He talked ish got people interested and backed it up to where his haters wanted to see him lose so badly. The opposite of Broner. Broner talks the talk but can't walk it. If Broner could fight I think he'd be a decent PPV sell but his skill doesnt match his mouth

Al Haymon.
Came from the music industry, in charge of boy bands and pop stars.
Haymon realized it was not about the talent it was about cultivating and growing your fanbase to make it big.
Floyd didn't have to boxing enteretainly, get knockouts fight the best fighters in their prime, it just needed to build his brand, do some WWE, do dancing with the stars, take easy fights that move him up a level.
Stay away from risk, be controversial and build a persona like the spice girls each had to your fanbase can rally behind and they will support you no matter what.
Haymon done a great job, shame boxing suffered because of it.
It started with the passing of the torch fight with DLH. After that, he played the heel or villian to the letter and fought lots of popular Hispanic/Latin fighters and his mega rivalry with Philippino Manny Pac helped him boost his sales.
