It is a straight-forward question.
How does Anthony Joshua keep four belts? Let's ignore that he got knocked out by Andy Ruiz for a moment. All sanctioning bodies demand that the champion defend his title once a year, which is a fair demand so that others also get a chance at the title rather than one man holding it hostage and not doing anything. So, with four belts, he should be fighting 4 fights per year...all mandatories and have absolutely no time for any other fight.
I recall reading on many threads that Wilder has had only a few mandatories since becoming champ...and he's got to deal with only one belt. People were complaining that WBC is an accomplice in all that and Haymon got Mauricio in his pocket and what not. I am assuming the same principles would apply to other sanctioning bodies.
Yet, Joshua has kept these four belts for some time now. But how?
Fight Pulev early 2020, have Usyk-Chisora happen at the same time, and then fight Usyk in the summer to settle the WBO, before making the WBA mandatory after that (Oquendo is still due, the fight likely doesn't do major business in the US or UK, so that'd be the type of fight you'd take to Nigeria with Joshua).
But once things are set, you're basically on the cycle for however long you'd be champion.Joshua's title defense of his WBO title isn't due until June of 2020. That's approximately six months from now. Joshua's title defense of his IBF title is due in April of next year against Kubrat Pulev. He can defend both titles if he wants to because there are no unification or undisputed bouts on the horizon since both Wilder and Fury are off limits. They have a two way rematch clause in their contracts for their February 22 bout which is going to keep them busy for the balance of the year 2020.

You sound very new to the sport of boxing, he does NOT have to defend each belt once a year the sanctioning bodies will allow aj to pay a fee to take another fight while postponing his mandatory
He's asking a question, why do you gotta be a dick about it? The fact that he's actually trying to gain knowledge means he's smarter than most of the people around here, who already think they know it all.

That rule is about fighting/defending the belt once a year..not necessarily vs a mandatory..eg a voluntary fight is good enough if the challenger has a high ranking.
wbo rules
This obligation may be subject to modification or extension by the Championship Committee for good cause, such
as (but not limited to) participation by the Champion in a unification bout or
The designation of Mandatory Challenger does not create
rights in the Challenger, and may be subject to such conditions, modification, or
extension as the Championship Committee determines.
In the interim period of the compulsory defense of his title against the Mandatory
Challenger, the World Champion may defend his title against any opponent
selected from the list of the fifteen best boxers in his weight category or division,
according to the current list of classifications of the Organization.
furthermore..
Usyk became mandatory relatively recently. Whyte was actually holding that mandatory position before but opted to go the wbc route.
Pulev sexually assaulted a transexual...otherwise he would have been the one fighting aj in June.

Why though? He got his title in 2017 IIRC. He should have defended it in 2018, then in 2019, and looking for his 3rd defense in 2020. Yet, he'll have only one. Why?
Doesn't that limit the chances for upcoming fighters trying a shot at the title?
Like I said, if he has 4 belts than he should have 4 mandatories per year but he doesn't.
usually when there is a unified champ the sanctioning bodies take turns with their mandos......
Agree but shouldn't all those mandatories, even if they come one after the other, all be in the same year? Otherwise, those upcoming fighters have to wait a lot to get an opportunity.
